Install OpenSuse 11.1 w/nvidia 6150e graphics adapter.

Hi all,

I’ve been thinking about trying OpenSuse for a while now and yesterday decided to give it a go. I have the iso downloaded and burned correctly and was able to install ok but when I rebooted, after the install process, I could not see anything but a black screen.

Now, when I first tried Kubuntu 9.04 I had the same issue and to resolve it needed to install in “safe mode” first then, after installing the OS, install the nvidia 180, I think it is, graphics driver. I’m assuming I’ll need to do something similar here.

So, when I get to the OpenSuse 11.1 boot screen is there a selection I need to check to invoke a ‘safe graphics’ mode? Or, is there another solution?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the Failsafe Boot option, it should do that.

Ok, I’ll try that. I assume if successful I can just update the video driver right after install?

There are lots of options, let us know what happens

Ok, I’m not seeing the failsafe boot option; did I miss the obvious lol?

I did try to change the video mode to 1600x1200 but that wouldn’t even get me to the first portion of the install screen. My monitor keeps giving me the “signal out of range” error and then putting itself to sleep. (Monitor = HP w2207h)

When you boot the green boot screen ShOuld have a option to boot Failsafe. If not try this:

Pause the boot by moving the down arrow, then back up to the default boot. But now press backspace, it should delete any text where you can see VGA=.
Remove all text and now type just the number:
3
and hit enter
at the login type your user name and then password
now type:
su
then the root password
now type this:
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa
(N.B. the 0 is a zero not a letter)
now reboot
if you don’t get a gui login
login as user and try this at the cli
startx

This should give a basic display to work from so as to install your diver:

All right, success! Before I saw your last reply I saw another post you’d made suggesting using x11failsafe in the boot options. I did this and have a clean install, woohoo!

Now, to get the grahics driver updated lol.

Ok, I cannot update at all as I keep getting a cannot connect to server error. Moreover, my internet connection in general is very spotty to say the least. Something isn’t right but I’m not sure how to correct it. So how do I a) get updated in terms of the OS and b) update my video driver?

Thanks for the help and your patience in working with a noob.

Open a terminal and go su then do the following:

lspci -v

Post the result and we’ll pick out your wireless?? and Video devices from there.

Thanks caf…

First, I have a wired connection though using a Linksys router within the home.

Second I tried opening the Gnome Terminal and entering the command you listed preceded by the su command and got an error. One thing that I thought was really weird with this was that my terminal prompt shows mike@linux-teny. Is that normal? In looking at my network settings I see the same thing for host name etc instead of the gateway being 192.168.yada.yada.

Not sure what else I can tell you but fire away and I’ll provide as much detail as I’m able lol. Thanks!

Open a terminal and do this exactly:
type: su (hit enter)
type: root password (hit enter) N.B. As you type no text displays!

If you are root there will be a # at the end

Now type

lspci -v

Ok, that worked.

Here’s the output;

linux-teny:/home/mike # lspci -v
