Install New Video Adapter and Load Proper Drivers

Well, it’s finally here from China. My new NVidia:
AGP 8X GeForce EVGA 6200 4X 8X 256 MB Video Graphic Card
and I need to configure it for the present system which has the mga driver for my Matrox Marvel G550 video adapter.

Can anyone give a suggestion as to how to go about accomplishing this? Should I turn off the machine, insert the new video adapter and boot to the Live Version of 13.1 and perform an upgrade install, or what?

Thanks for any help.

No, that’s not necessary. (you can’t do an upgrade install with the Live Version btw)
Just replace the card, and your system should autmatically load the correct driver for the new card.

But, if you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf explicitely specifying the mga driver, you should remove that first. Otherwise X will not start.
If you have problems with booting, just select “Recovery Mode” under “Advanced Settings” in the boot menu.

I have no idea how well the default (and opes source) nouveau works with this card though.
You might want to install the proprietary nvidia driver (to get the best performance), but you can do this after you changed the card.
For the GeForce 6200 you need the G02 driver, that’s the second 1-click install here:
SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE

Well, the saga continues. No problems, just a report of what happened. The system determined the card upon reboot and downloaded drivers afterward. This process installed successfully. Then I utilized the One-Click you mentioned and installed those drivers where I notice a perceptible change in the font (it increased in size) and am deciding to go a few days to see how things have changed.

Would you know if the hardware acceleration is active now? This was the primary reason for upgrading but don’t know how to test to see if I’ve been successful in this task. Thanks again.

Install the package “Mesa-demo-x” (if it is not installed already) and look at the output of:

glxinfo | grep render

And/or have a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Maybe post both if you want advice.

Didn’t know how much of it was necessary for analysis. Sorry.

Well, your system uses the fbdev driver, not nvidia, that’s why the fonts are so big…
Here’s the error:

Could you please post which nvidia rpms you have installed?

rpm -qa | grep nvidia
linux-uc1g:/home/charles # rpm -qa | grep nvidia
nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default-304.108_k3.11.6_4-31.2.i586
x11-video-nvidiaG02-304.108-32.1.i586
nvidia-computeG02-304.108-32.1.i586
linux-uc1g:/home/charles #

For some reason the wrong kernel module was installed. You are using kernel-desktop, so you need nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop.
So enter YaST->Software Management, select “nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop” for installation and select “nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default” (and “kernel-default” as well, that has been installed as well I guess) to uninstall.

Or type the following into a terminal window:

sudo zypper rm nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default kernel-default +nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop

Got that done.

linux-uc1g:/home/charles # rpm -qa | grep nvidia
x11-video-nvidiaG02-304.108-32.1.i586
nvidia-computeG02-304.108-32.1.i586
nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-304.108_k3.11.6_4-31.2.i586
linux-uc1g:/home/charles #

Does this look proper?

Yes, this looks fine now.

After a reboot the system should use the nvidia driver then.
Again, run “glxinfo | grep render” to verify.

linux-uc1g:/home/charles # glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6200/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
    GL_KTX_buffer_region, GL_NVX_conditional_render,
    GL_OES_fbo_render_mipmap, GL_OES_get_program_binary, GL_OES_mapbuffer,
linux-uc1g:/home/charles #

This seems to be right but I don’t know for sure.

Yes, that looks good.

Tomorrow, I think if not tonight, I’m off to resetting my TCP/IP stack because of an issue with streaming media halting and staccato stuttering. May be a buffering issue but I don’t think so. I’ll open another thread soon. Thanks for all that you do!

All things being equal, i prefer to run glxgears as a check of 3d
acceleration. You should get within 20% of the expected values for your
card and CPU.

?-)

Running glxgears brought me an image with 3 rotating gears only. No values whatever? Did I do things properly? Thanks!

If you run glxgears in a terminal window, it should output the FPS rate it achieved, something like this:

wolfi@amiga:~/Desktop> glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.192 FPS
274 frames in 5.0 seconds = 54.663 FPS
290 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.822 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.018 FPS

Please note that by default the maximum framerate is limited by the monitor refresh rate (i.e. 60 FPS in my case) like the message says.
To have it run with maximum framerate, do this:

wolfi@amiga:~/Desktop> vblank_mode=0 glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
7435 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1486.971 FPS
7975 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1594.641 FPS
8161 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1632.121 FPS
8063 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1612.457 FPS

Mine was a bit different with the vblank_mode=0 environment. It didn’t seem to take. Hmm.

Seems I may have done something wrong again.

Well, in your case, “sync to VBlank” seems to be active in the nvidia driver then.

See here for a possible way to turn that off:
linux - Disable vertical sync for glxgears - Stack Overflow

For Nvidia graphics, the the proprietary Nvidia driver:

$ echo "0/SyncToVBlank=0" >> ~/.nvidia-settings-rc

(or uncheck the nvidia-settings option at X Screen 0 / OpenGL Settings / Sync to VBlank)

charles@linux-uc1g:~> echo "0/SyncToVBlank=0" >> ~/.nvidia-settings-rc
