I’ve just downloaded the latest install media. I’m pleased to report that the boot splash screen appeared and I selected ‘INSTALLATION’.
The media continued to boot and then said it couldn’t find any media. Obviously I’ve just booted from the media, so the DVD is being detected (initially).
I checked the media several times and burnt it at a lower speed, but still no luck.
I can confirm that Gentoo and Debian boot fine from the same drive and using the same disk.
My thoughts are that the kernel initially loads modules, but when the next bit of the install happens (post splash screen), the module is not re-loaded.
This happened to me once when installing openSUSE 10.something.The problem was, I think, an incompatibility between the BIOS ACPI (or maybe APIC, not sure which) implementation and the device driver used during installation.
The solution was to disable ACPI (or APIC) during install. IIRC you can set this before starting the installation by including the option acpi=off (or noapic) in the kernel options line. I think that there is a help item about this in the initial screen. You’ll have to check the correct syntax for the option.
Not sure this is your case, as this happened a long time ago.
Sadly, none of these options worked, and I was dropped into the old Yast dialogue. I could try the network install if I can find a server to point to, or whatever information it needs.
On the up-side, I did get the Christmas splash screen
