Fire up Yast -> Software Management select View -> patterns and click on the MATE Desktop Environment and hit accept.

i wanted to install KDE also should i use the openSUSE ISO again and do fresh install of it creating /home root again or is it better to just install the DE as you suggested
Yes.
One of the early screens for the installer asks whether you want to use online repos. Select “yes” for that, and add the main repo and perhaps the update repo.
When asked for a desktop, choice, I don’t think MATE is offered. If it is not offered, select “minimal X”. Later in the install, you can click “Software” on the summary screen. And the MATE pattern should be there.

Honestly, if you want both KDE and MATE, then choose KDE for the initial install choice, and add the MATE pattern later.
Right now tho i’m running XFCE and loving it. but i also want to try KDE and MATE. Whats your suggestions now
Just install them. Select “Patterns” view in Yast software management, and store the patterns for both.
Since you are using XFCE, you are probably using “lightdm” as login manager. When you next login, there should be a selection where you can choose XFCE or MATE or KDE (and probably others).
If you are set for automatic login, then you won’t see that choice. So just logout, and you will get the choice on the next login.
I have 22.1 free of root will that be enough for KDE and MATE
Assuming giga bytes yes. If using BTRFS and snapper you may want to ease back on number of snapshots kept. How big is total root?
Yes, that should be plenty.
However, I would suggest that you go with “ext4” (or “ext3”) rather than “btrfs” for the root file system. You might be short of space for the “btrfs” snapshots.
Thank you. Sorry forgot to mention its ext4 already. so is /home and is encrypted also.
I’m able to move some /home to the root if needed to be
I’m not sure why that is happening. It is probably safe to go with option 3.
