install java, flash and so on on openSUSE 11.1

Hi, i would like to install Sun Java and adobeflash player (and reader) because openjdk does not works

i tried to add non-oss repository but looks to be unavailable!

will this be fixed or really suse 11.1 will not provide non-oss at all?

can i find that rpm somewhere like i did on all that time?

if not, i’m afraid but i think i’ll search for a more “end-user” distro like mandriva is…

Have you tried the 1-click install method ? find it here Restricted Formats/11.0 - openSUSE-Community

Andy

mmm… that means i have to add openSUSE 11.0 repos right? i think that like this i may breack something (or not?)

and what about 11.1? will that packages available?

thanks

openSUSE 11.1 is not released yet. Its still in beta phase. You will have all the packages and repositories you need when its officially released sometime in December.

are you sure about that? i red factory and project list where they talk about FULLY remove non-oss stuff because of some stupid bad press, btw i do betatesting since suse 10.2 and all time (suse 10.2, 10.3 and 11.0) non-oss software and repositories was ready for test from alpha1, tis time instead we are on beta2 and n package yet available

Andrea

You may have had a problem adding the repository from download.opensuse.org because an equipment failure has caused some the datacenter servers to be down. You should be using a mirror instead, anyway.

As far as 11.1, I suspect there is a change: IcedTea in the oss repository. That is, Sun’s open source java 1.7, which since it’s open source, would not belong in a non-oss repository. It’s there in factory oss now.

that’s is exactly what i’m talking about, non-oss repository NOT exist at all, and openjdk (an opensource implementation of sun java) doesn’t works, or better works with a little numembers of java sites/apps. samething for open pdf readers, they are not able to open some kind of pdfs, that adobe reader do.

java and openjdk is the same with flash and gnash…the first one works, the second not.

i accept that non oss software will not provided with dvd, but with suse 11.1 i’m no more able to easly install them… as i told, if things will not changes, i’m afraid i’ll search for better “end users” distro like mandriva (i hate ubuntu :stuck_out_tongue: )

It is IcedTea that is in the Java repository. That is not the same as openjdk 1.6. IcedTea is Sun’s 1.7, and AFAIK Sun does not intend for that java to work any less than Sun’s previous proprietary installation.

From where are you concluding that there will be no non-oss on the 11.1 DVD when released? (Of course, in past years, we have been able to easily install proprietary software from other repositories - as long as it is available, why a problem?)

ok i’ll try icedtea, but what about flasplayer plugin, adobe reader, ipw2200 and so on?

thanks

oh, and bye the way, as i thinked icedtea IS NOT sun java:

IcedTea is derived from OpenJDK, Sun’s open-source implementation of
the Java SE platform. At this time the build from which IcedTea was
constructed corresponds to an early build of JDK 7. When JDK 7 is
complete it will implement the Java SE 7 Platform Specification. Work
on that specification is underway, but far from final. Any APIs in the
JDK 7 implementation, whether new or old, are therefore subject to
minor adjustments, major revisions, or even outright removal between
now and the time that the Java SE 7 Platform Specification is
finalized. Please take these facts into account before depending upon
IcedTea.

It is and it isn’t Sun. It is from the standpoint that the code base is released, supervised, and licensed by Sun. It isn’t in that IcedTea is one of several “community” projects based on OpenJDK - the Sun open-sourced Java code. IcedTea is a Red Hat project that addresses the issue that ~4% of the code could not be GPL’d, by replacing that “encumbered” code with new open source code. AFAIK the project passed Sun’s Technology Compatibility Check (TCK) test a few months ago. But having said that, and regardless of Java’s “one platform” portability, there are differences between versions and implementations, and how applications are written. So it happens that an application may not be forward compatible or may not work on a different Java implementation (which may even be the fault of the implementation, not Java itself). Good information here Sun Java FAQ and here Java Finally Free & Open

My guess - and I don’t know specifically about openSUSE - is that distros will now include IcedTea in oss (which is where it is in 11.1) as the default, and leave it to users to separately install Sun’s proprietary SE 6 if they wish. Several have announced doing so.

As far as the other non-oss software, according to this openSUSE News under Upcoming Factory Changes, and other web pages, there will be a non-oss. But the whole repository structure is changing with the move to the Build Service; so far it looks like there are individual non-oss projects/repositories that get pulled together for the release. The list is here https://build.opensuse.org/project/list_public.

I’ve seen nothing to indicate that Flash and Acroread will be excluded. Have you?

While on Bugzilla I stumbled across this of interest re an openjdk incompatibility (from one of the dev’s) . . .

We will still provide a latest available Sun JVM. The non-oss repo will be available after release of 11.1.

There was a subsequent mailing-list discussion which centered on a concern whether Java 1.5 will be included in 11.1. What I gathered from that thread is that IcedTea will be the default because all the shipped applications compile successfully against this jdk. But that the Sun versions will still be in non-oss. Re the other non-oss question in general, the above comment indicates that the non-oss repo will not be set up until release, so that is why we don’t see it yet.

Assuming this info is correct, that would appear to address your concerns.

Perfect, thanks for your answers… i have to wait untill 11.1 will be realesed.

thanks a lot

Sure, glad to have been of some help.
