I have a brand new HP Officejet Pro 8500.
YAST recognized it and configured without complaint.
When I went to print an Openoffice.org document I got this:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%BoundingBox: 0 0 612 .....
and then at least ten blank pages.
Got the same results trying to print a test page from CUPS.
I noticed that the version of HPLIP was 2.8 and that the version on HP’s web site (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) is 3.9. I uninstall hplip 2.8 using YAST and tried to install 3.9 from the command line.
After the first attempt I installed several of the packages that the hplip installer said were mandatory reboot and try again.
On the second attempt I get this error message:
error: Configure failed with error: General/unknown error
I’m stumped now. Any thoughts on what to try next?

IBM ThankPad Suse 11.0
Problem solved.
I installed hplip 3.9 from the SUSE build service.
reboot
Now I have a friendly little hp logo in the system tray. The device works as expected as a printer. Every time I start up the system tries to configure the scanner. This device isn’t on the scanner list yet.
If I can still use it as a “dumb” fax machine, that won’t matter to me much.
So the first problem is solved, but I still don’t have the scanner driver.
hplip driver 3.9.2 supports scanning too.
Make sure that you installed SANE.
I have the same problem. Installing HPLIP helps to run the the HP Officejet 8500 as printer, but there is allway much trouble, to install the scanning functionality.
To be precise:
-
I install the HPLIP via Yast, (PackMan repository)
-
Run hp-setup: printing works now, but no scanning
-
Try to install scanning via Yast -> hardware _> scanning, but the OfficeJet pro 8500 is not in the driver list
-
Sane is installed, and as much I know all dependencies are o.k.
Uninstalling and reinstalling n-times, and after the 2. or the 3. or … time, the scanner suddenly works - but why?
Everytime I setup a new system, the problems are alike
Could somebody try to solve the problem?
