Install Game on Suse 11.3

I am very newby with suse and linux and i wanted install a beautiful 3D game real-time strategy, but i dont know wich and how to do this…may someone help me?
thanks

Hello Torakiki76,

To install Software you need to start YaST->Software->Software Management.
From there you can select the tab “RPM Groups”.
If the tab isn’t there click and hold view and select “RPM Groups” from there.
On your left you’ll see a tree-structure.
From there select “-Amusements->Games->Strategy”.

On your right a list of packages will appear, from there select the game you want.

If you’ve got any questions feel free to ask!

Good luck!

Hy Edward_lii

ok ill try your procedure, but can you recommend a good 3D real-time strategy game working with suse 11.3?

P.S.:sorry for my english…

Hello Torakiki76,

I don’t play a lot of RTS games but these two I liked:

  • Glest ( + glest-megapack)
  • 0ad (not finished)

0ad isn’t finished yet.
It’s playable but there’s no computer player so you need to play against friends.

Good luck!

So ill try Glest…but ill find it in yast like you explain?with glest-megapack?
ok you dont play RTS but wich is the game that you play normaly? wich the best for you?

Hello Torakiki76,

Yes, you only need to make sure that you have the “openSUSE Buildservice - Games” repository.

Could you run this command from the commandline and post the output;

zypper lr

You don’t need to follow all the steps I told you because you know the name of the package.
In that case you just start YaST->Software->Software Management.
And select the tab “Search” and enter glest.
All packages with glest in the name will appear on your right.

Good luck!

I do not play games on linux but I remebered there was a thread about linux
games on this forum

http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php?t=444100

maybe this can contain some useful hints what games are available.
If you do also want to play windows games, you should probably look at
playonlinux (this is something built on top of wine it is available by the
packman repo). Not every windows game will work with that but some 3d games
do work obviously very good with it.
Look this up for a description

The games mentioned on this page
http://www.junauza.com/2008/09/5-best-free-and-open-source-real-time.html
are directly available in opensuse (games repository), simply search for
them in yast.
Good luck.

Warzone2100 is a very good RTS, it’s available from the Packman repository.

Information on adding repositories can be found here.

Hello Torakiki76,

You don’t need to add a repo because you’ve already got the Games repository.

@Torakiki76, you’ve got the Games repository so you should be able to install the games mentioned in the link.

To install simply start YaST->Software->Software Management.
And enter the name of the game in the search field and press search.

Good luck!

Ok…thanks to all, ill try also that game…i tried yesterday 0 A.D. but i got some error when i start the game, the error say to try to force s3tc with driconf command, but command in terminal was not working…the error also say to install libtxc_dxtn but i couldnt find it, may you give me help?

no idea? somebody can help me?

Hello Torakiki76,

Sorry for the late response.

Could you post the output?

The problem has something to do with your graphics card/drive.
So could you tell me which graphics card you have and which drivers?

Here’s some background information:

  • S3TC
  • DriConf (Not available in standard openSUSE repositories)

I’ve found a repository containing driconf for openSUSE.
Here’s a link: software.opensuse.org: Search Results
But be careful I don’t know if it works and I haven’t tested it myself.

Best of luck!

my graphics card is Ati mobility Radeon X700 and i use default driver from installation of suse 11.3
if you need more detail may you give the commands?
here the output

the text about driconfig and libtxc_dxtn is inside the game during start and i cant post here…only is write to install the library for fix the problem or try to force s3tc…

So what i have to do?

i tried to install driconf and i try to give some command to launch but i was not able to use it

i tried to install library Mesa lbtxc_dxtn but i dont know why yast say that failed the installation…

Hello Torakiki76,

I tried it myself and encountered the same error.
There was no way of running driconf.

Could you tell me from where you’ve got the lbtxc_dxtn library?
And the exact error message YaST is giving you.

Just to make everything clear:

  • You can’t run 0.A.D. because it needs s3tc compression.

  • We can’t run driconf from the package, I even tried to compile it from source but another problem appeared: My libGL package is to old.

  • If I’m correct you tried installing the Mesa lbtxc-dxtn library. (BTW dxtn is the openGL name for s3tc)

Now the question is: What can you do?
**
1: Install drivers
**You haven’t installed any drivers for your ati card.
So maybe when installing them the driver can activate/use s3tc on your GPU.
First I need to know which driver you use.
So could you post the output of this command:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If you haven’t got drivers installed I recommend you read this: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users

**2: Try to install/use driconf
**I don’t think this could be useful.
When installing from source you most likely encounter the same problem as me.
You’ll have an old libGL in order to start driconf.
Updating your libGL will probably cause more problem so I think we don’t need to try this.

**3: Ignore 0.A.D.
**You can also forget about 0AD, but this only moves the problem.
You probably haven’t got the correct drivers installed.
Meaning that most other 3D games will run “very” slow.
You need to have Direct Rendering enabled.
And for most Graphics Card you need the proprietary drivers in order to make this work.

Some questions for you:
Have you played any 3D games under openSUSE?
Could you post the output of this command:

glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"

**Conclusion
**I think the problem lies in your drivers for your Graphics card.
So the first thing to do is check if you’ve got the right drivers, and if they work.

Sorry for the long post!:stuck_out_tongue:
If you’ve got any questions feel free to ask!

Best of luck!

i check for driver of my graphics card, conclusion is that the default driver that i have installed are the only one that can work correctly, here the driver:

linux-rx5c:~ # lsmod |grep -i radeon
radeon 815912 3
ttm 55842 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 29180 1 radeon
drm 179671 5 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 5604 1 radeon

here the results of your command:

linux-rx5c:~ # cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory
linux-rx5c:~ # glxinfo | grep “direct rendering”
direct rendering: Yes

here where i found mesa libtxc_dxtn:
