Hi, all.
I was hoping to install OpenSuse to a cheap desktop computer I have, using a usb. The opensuse-guide page suggests that if my usb is plugged into my computer, I should be able to restart and get a menu with four options: ‘boot from hard disk’, ‘installation’, ‘upgrade’, and ‘more…’. In actuality, I get the options ‘opensuse leap 15.2 kde live’, ‘failsafe - opensuse leap 15.2 kde live’, ‘media check’ and ‘boot from hard disk’. If I select the first option, it lets me boot normally and the desktop has an icon to install the OS, which proceeds as though I were installing but it does not actually result in me being able to boot the OS without having the usb plugged in. It may be that I have poor google fu but I haven’t found a solution which enables me to successfully install this thing. Any suggestions or pointers etc?
Right. That assumes that you downloaded the DVD installer or the NET installer.
Apparently, you instead downloaded the live KDE media. That’s actually okay, and you can install from there. But it won’t quite fit the description that you were reading.
Beyond that, it’s hard to guess what went wrong. If you now select “boot from hard disk” from that USB menu, does it boot into your newly installed system?
If I select the hard drive, I get a black screen which I assume normally would show boot sequence details a la the type of stuff one sees in the console, but in practice it shows nothing. I seem get grub recovery mode if I don’t even hit f12 right after pushing the power button; I saw a suggestion to us ls to find where the kernel is in recovery mode but it seems nothing is there and I don’t know a heck of a lot about recovery mode so I didn’t want to fiddle beyond my ability.
I did not see anything about having installed system in original post.
If you are using legacy BIOS (otherwise “boot from hard disk” likely did not work at all) then “boot from hard disk” simply loads the very first sector of HDD and jumps to it. If you did not install anything, this sector likely contains garbage so computer hangs.
It stands to reason - to “boot from hard disk” you must have installed something on this hard disk that is capable to boot.
Once I had time to fiddle with the desktop again, I got it done thanks to the pointer about trying to install the live vs dvd version.
If anyone ever has a similar problem and stumbles across this thread, here is what I did:
Got the correct dvd version onto my usb drive, and plugged it in
when I powered the computer on, and hit f12 for usb boot, it asked me whether I wanted (among other things) to load via legacy or uefi. I tried both, and legacy appeared to be the correct choice after trying them.
Once I selected that, it then gave me the screen I expected and which I described in the first post in the thread. I then installed the os successfully.
