I have tried installing suse 11.0 on my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A 7260, mobile AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with 512 MB RAM) and all goes well until the installer starts copying the files (following the formatting). - Then it just freezes and “dies”. :eek: (I tried it several times and it freezes at different stages, but always while copying.)
I have tried it also with the LiveCD, which runs smoothly, but when I try to really install 11.0, it also freezes while the installer copies the files.
I have checked the Md5sums and they are ok.
I have had suse versions from 9.3 on the laptop and they all ran - I’m rather nonplused what the problem could be.
I just read in a thread rieserfs seems to have a bug in the final that can attribute to this (sucks big time but they are working on it)… If you are installing with riezerfs you could retry using ext3.
The laptop is totally dead - no mouse, no console.
Maybe try running a memtest to exclude that as an issue…
I never had any problems with the memory - and all the other suse versions I had on the machine never had any problems and the suse live-system runs smoothly - as long as don’t try to install it.
I did a memtest recently and that was ok too.
Do you know which driver is being loaded for you harddrive controller?
As far as I can tell, it only loads generic drivers - and I don’t know which driver was used before and I have no way of finding out since the freeze happens after formatting.
I did a bios update, that didn’t help and I try to install the german version.
You could try disabling advanced power management, but I don’t think that’s the issue here.
I’m not to big in troubleshooting install errors so I’m afraid I’m of no use to you… Others might step in with more experience.
You could try giving the irc or mailing lists a try; Communicate - openSUSE
If that also fails and you are sure it’s not a hardware issue a bug report might be an option, but first make sure it’s not something in your setup that is causing this…

I have experienced something like that a long time ago in a galaxy^WSUSE
release far away, whose installation kernel didn’t activate the CPU fan
after taking over from the BIOS, so the CPU would after a certain amount
of installation work overheat and go into an emergency shutdown.
My solution^Wworkaround at the time was to enter “acpi=off” on the
installer kernel command line so that the kernel would leave the fan
control to the BIOS. The installation went fine after that. Finally,
I removed the “acpi=off” parameter from the default GRUB entry in
/boot/grub/menu.lst where the installer had duly copied it, and ended
up with working ACPI.
