install/boot issues

I setup a dual boot config with openSuSE 12.3 and win 7. However i can’t boot 12.3 normally. A normal boot doesn’t get past the splash screen. I have to boot it in recovery mode to get to a login and when i do “startx” it fails. So i cant get to the GUI. This is my first time using any other flavor of linux besides ubuntu so i’m still kind of new to the linux game. I’m sure i’m missing something simple but i dont know what it is. Help me obi wan kinobi you’re my only hope…

my laptop is a hp pavilion g6
amd processor
Radeon video
6 gbs of RAM

I’m sure this is just a simple video card issue i just dont know how to solve it.

startx does not work as a user any more use init 5 as root

But I suspect Video also you can run yast from the command line and install the ATI/AMD video drivers which probably would help.

Does the fail safe mode boot and can you get to the Desktop from there? Is under the advanced option for your current kernel in the boot screen

Another Install/Boot Issue
I updated from 11.4 to 12.2. Normal boot does not come up. I get the SUSE screen for a few seconds and then it goes black. I can get a FAILSAFE boot. It seems that the system does not recognize my display. Is there anyway I can fix this. I have an Acer LCD AL951 with 1280x1024 resolution.
Thank you

You probably should start your own thread, and when you do, specify the
video card you’re using (the monitor really makes little difference
unless it’s reporting a refresh rate out of range or some similar issue).

the only way i can get a command prompt is if i boot the recovery mode from the grub. normal boot freezes on the splash screen.

tried running init 5 and it looks like its booting up but it stops after “Started /etc/init.d/boot.local Compatibility”… then it just sits there…

will try running yast and installing ATI video drivers… i’ll get back to you when i try that…

thanks for the help so far!
