Install 12.1 failure

I’m attempting to install 12.1 on a Dell Dimension 4600 system. The installation begins and indicates a display issue - 31A invalid. I chose VESA 800X600. Installation continues through 'Loading Installation steps 1 - 6. Then it displays something about initializing a virtual console. Then the screen goes black. POR is the only way out. I connected an Analog flat screen based on some older issues that were similar - but same deal - black screen of death. Any ideas? Thanks Steve Freund

So it sounds like a video issue to me. Normally, I suggest you press I thinks its F5 and select Vesa which should allow the install to complete. I normally then recommend on the first startup of openSUSE from the Grub OS selection menu is to use the kernel load option called** nomodeset **which you type in just before you press the enter key to startup the default openSUSE kernel installation. You can edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file as root later and add the command to be used every time if it works. If you can look at the Failsafe startup you will see that nomodeset is also there, but you don’t want to use the other added settings unless you have to.

Thank You,

I tried what you suggested (VESA) - same results. What I can see of the last 2 lines before the screen goes dark:
initializing virtual console
found a linux console terminal . . . .

I noticed under Kernel - there is a SAFE mode - is that worth a shot ?

Try the TEXT mode
