Install 11.1 via USB

Using an 8 gig. USB stick and following the instructions on the unetbootin page, I was able to boot from it and start the install. But when I try to “choose the source medium” and select the USB, and I am asked to “enter the source directory”, I respond with “/suse” an get a “no repository found” error. This is my USB root directory of sub-directories…

file:///media/disk/Documents
file:///media/disk/System
file:///media/disk/boot
file:///media/disk/docu
file:///media/disk/dosutils
file:///media/disk/images
file:///media/disk/media.1
file:///media/disk/suse

…the install rpms are under /suse in directories named i586, i686, and noarch.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I’m having the same problem. At the start of my install mine asks for CD 1 after clicking back I try to find the install off the my 8gig USB drive. I’m stuck with the same “enter source directory”. I’ve tried different things but all come back with the yellow and red “no repository found”. Anyone got any idea what we can do?

I had to use the net install from the installer main menu. Of course you need an internet connection. It was quite slow.

Have the IP number (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) of the download server before you start as it will not resolve the address. You can get the address from Convert Host Name to IP Address or Find IP address of a host - e.g. find IP address of host name of. When asked for the repo directory make sure it ends with a “/”. Example (without quatation marks) “/opensuse/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/”

Good luck.

To the “OP” the answer to what you type for directory when prompted is “/” without the quotes because the install image is on the bootable USB just like an autorun DVD disk.

I just made this work so I will recap for those having trouble.

  1. Download OpenSuse 11.2 DVD iso (I used the torrent tracker from the OpenSuse website and bit torrent)

  2. Download “UNetbootin” for “Windows” from sourceforge (I made this in XP Pro)

  3. Run UNetbootin and select “disk image” then browse to the Suse DVD iso you just downloaded

4)Make sure you have a blank 8 GB USB flash drive plugged in and make sure UNetbootin has the correct drive letter selected.

5)Click “OK” and go kill 45 minutes somewhere else.

  1. After it finished I restarted XP and removed the flash drive before boot, don’t know if this was needed but it’s what I did.

  2. My server (Prolient DL145 G2) saw this flash drive as a “USB Hard Disc” so I did not have to change the bios settings since the SATA hard disc in the server was blank. It just booted to the flash drive, yours might require reseting the bios to grab the flash drive first.

  3. When the machine boots to the flash drive select “Linux” and hit enter.

  4. At the start of install mine asks for CD 1, after clicking back I answer the questions about language and keyboard then select my 8gig USB drive.

  5. When it asks for “source directory” I choose the “8 GB flash drive” then for “Directory” just type “/” without the quotes.

  6. Normal GUI based install begins, proceed as you would with a DVD disc as the install media.

  7. Make sure your bios is set to try your regular hard drive first when install makes its first reboot (or just unplug the flash drive till it starts booting and snap it back in before Suse asks for it)

  8. Finish your install as you normally do and enjoy!

I have been writing this as I was doing it and I am now looking at the desktop.

I set this Flash Drive up because my servers have no optical drives and I was tired of taking the top off and rigging an IDE DVD drive up just to load the OS. I have made these install flash drives for XP before but this is my first for Suse Linux.

Good Luck!
