instability problems

Hello.

Lately I’m having stability problems with opensuse 11.3. On three occasions when you login the system is rebooted.

Also blocked the entire system three times. This happens shortly after starting and running amule, but not if due to this application.

Use kde 4.5, these problems are happening in the last week.

I am concerned this instability.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Please provide some additional information. You can look at the system logs, for example /var/log/messages, to get more information on what happened just prior to the reboot.

As for the issue with amule, try running it from the command line to see if it produces any output which can help show what the issue is.

Lews Therin

aMule starts without problems since I do not see any error console. The blocking problem is not whether the amule exactly. I put the log today I suffered a system crash if they see something strange.

I agree that it sounds like a KDE or X problem, but do not rule out memory
problems whenever crashes occur. Have you run Memtest86+ for 12 hours? If not,
please do.

discard memory problem. I also suspect it is due to kde.

Maybe it is because the last update of kde. I just checked by zypper that an update is available for kde, I’ll update tomorrow and comment if problems persist.

Hello,

I still have the problem of system crashes. It has nothing to do with the amule, I’ve read of other kde which have also suffered similar crashes.

Solutions? can revert to the version of kde that has by default openSUSE 11.3 without problems?

Thanks.

During my 20+ years troubleshooting PC’s I learned to follow a few basic rules. #1 was “If the logs don’t show an obvious software issue always make sure you eliminate hardware issues first before proceeding further.”

If the hardware turns out to be OK then no harm’s been done, but if one thrashes around long enough trying to “fix” a non-existent software issue on a PC with bad memory then it won’t be long before the repair becomes a lot more difficult.

Note: My rule does not say “sometimes” or “eventually” or anything similar. It says “always”. That’s not an arbitrary rule. It’s one I arrived at after having wasted countless hours screwing around with software only to find I was dealing with something like a bad memory chip. Memory problems can be very obscure and only show up under very, very unique conditions, so a thorough test like that suggested by wlfinger is the only way to eliminate them.

BTW, In the interest of full disclosure I have to admit that a couple of years ago I posted a question in these forums and was given the same recommendation to recheck my memory*, and I rejected the advice based on the fact that I’d tested the modules not too long ago. Well, after a couple of wasted days, I finally broke down and tested them again. Do I need to tell you what I found?

  • I won’t swear to it, but I think it was lwfinger who gave me the recommendation.
