Initial set up KVM

Yast has a section for installing KVM server & tools, but linux.com advises “openSUSE includes patterns-openSUSE_KVM_server, which installs everything”.

Are these two different paths to the same result or are there differences?

Although I haven’t looked at the two that closely,
Based on overall appearances, the YaST “Install Virtualization” module does more than just invoke the KVM pattern… It also

  • Can install Xen and/or LXC to be managed by libvirt (vm manager) as well.
  • To ease your setup, a default bridge device (br0) can be set up automatically for you. Still, I personally don’t care one way or another to use the br0 device, I always either use or create new virtual networks which create new bridge devices using vm manager.

So, unless you’re experienced and expert, the only recommended way to install KVM for an easy experience is to use YaST.

Thanks for that. I’ll take your advice and install using YAST
