Information about vendor change

Hello everyone, I have been using Arch and Gentoo for a long time. After Gentoo’s long package compilation and the stability problems I experienced in Arch, I am thinking of switching to Tumbleweed. My question is as follows. After making a vendor change to install codecs, will it use the Packman repo for all system updates or will it only take the packages installed via Packman from the Packman repo and use the official repositories for the rest of the packages? Thanks

This is the case. It is called vendor stickiness.

Thank you very much for your answer. Will there be a problem if I install the necessary codecs via Yast during the installation or compile and install the necessary packages myself after the installation?

When you install software not using YaST and/or zypper , you can not expect that libzypp (the underlying software) knows anything about it. You have to arrange yourself that your own software does not collide with software from packages installed the official way.

Hi @can
Welcome to the forum. The official opensuse documentation can be found here:

Thank you very much for your answers. I never thought I would get an answer this soon. This really impressed me. I can’t wait to get started with the installation. I think I will be able to use opensuse for years to come because it has such a great community.

I will add to my previous post:

This answer is independent of the fact that the software is codecs, it is true for all software.

This answer is also independent of the fact that you compiled it or if you got it another way. Again, this is true for all software.

BTW, why should you want to compile the codecs yourself? Isn’t there something that really misses from openSUSE to start that adventure on?
