What is the name of the application that is taking care of network management in the standard KDE 4.2 installation?
Apparently there are a couple of network managers in the repositories, such as Network Manager. Can I install for example that one as well? Would it cause conflicts?

Networkmanager from kde3 is being used by most as the kde4 version has been buggy. I do recall some positive comments though recently. I would stick with the old one for now. If it ain’t broke…
Yeah, I noticed a couple of bugs, no major complaints from my side altogether. I might install KDE3 Network Manager nevertheless.
Do you happen to know what the KDE4 network management application / package is called?

I recommend
Webpin
Software.openSUSE.org
where you can search for yourself to find respective packages (“Networkmanager” might be a suitable search term here) or to install the “webpin” package giving you a CLI for performing such searches.
YaST and zypper offer search functions as well.
