Hi,
I work in opensuse 11.0 in gnome. The problem is that the "computer menue’ is inactive and it does not open also, the system is not being shut down.
Please kindly let me know what the problem is with gnome.

Okay then. 
While we are fixing your Computer menu use the native GNOME menu (it’s called maybe traditional GNOME menu or Custom Menu - add with right click to your panel > Add Applet).
Version: open a GNOME application example gedit. Open the About menu and select About GNOME. Copy+paste here the version.
Also post the output of
zypper lr
from gnome-terminal
.

PS. my knowledge of linux is very limited to the codes I work with. When I ask questions about a problem people say " go and read …" for me it means " go an find a pin in an ocean…" I love linux, but systematic learning is very good.
Right click to your panel (the component where is your Computer menu located). From this menu select the Add to Panel option. In the following window into the search bar type:
menu bar. This will filter out the Menu Bar applet, click on it and hit the Add button. Yey new menu!
In this menu click to the System button and select the About GNOME option. It will open you the About GNOME window - copy out the Version and paste here!

You mean the gnome main menu application (AKA the SLAB menu)
I never liked that thing, always thought that it was lackluster.
What I do for Opensuse is set up Gnome like it is on other distros, having the menubar and such.
lets see if removing the gnome main menu works, right click the “computer menue” as you call it and select “remove from panel”
Then replace it with either the “menubar” or “main menu”
But dont get the two confused, the gnome main menu and “main menu” are entirely different things, one way to tell the difference is the computer icon.
To add different things to your panel right click your panel and select “add to panel”
