In doubt with hardware - OS 11.1_64

Somebody please help, I’m new to Linux.:frowning:

In the past…I installed opensuse11.1_32 last week with KDE4.1 then upgraded to 4.2. After using the gimp that have to use “shift” button many times, the keyboard started to be not responding. I then closed all keyboard gesture like “slow keys, sticky keys, …”. After restarting the machine, the keyboard freezed within one minute. When I tried to shutdown the machine it will freeze, result in white blank screen. In doubt, I started to reinstall the machine with opensuse_64.

And now, I have a problem with network - I know I should post in another forum, but I think this might caused by my freshy hardware. I can use internet actually, but I can’t enter many websites that M$ in my dual boot could access. Moreover, the yast package manager can’t access to its repo causing a libcurl4 error message. Also, I can’t add another mirror due to the network problem!
This is weird, isn’t it?

Here is my computer’s hardware
Main Board : ASUS M2N-SLi Deluxe
AMD : Phenom9950
HDD : ST31000340SV
VGA : EAH4850MT/HTDI/512MB
RAM : DDR2 800MHz Kington 2GB
PSU : ASUS 550Watt

Things I want to know are…

  • Is my hardware compatible with opensuse11.1_64?
  • How to solve the problem with nonresponding keyboard?
  • How to get my network running fully again ?
  • I have heard that ati driver will not able to use compiz with another 3D program, Is that true?
  • Seriously, can linux harm PC’s driver? It scared me after having several errors in linux.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Please tell me if you need more information, I will post it immedietly

regard,
Pheximo

  • Your hardware prefers openSUSE x86_64 over the 32bit, since your system is a 64bit system. I suggest a reinstall using the x86_64 media.
  • Since it’s very likely that your troubles with keyboard and networking are gone after that, I’ll leave that for the moment,
  • First search if it can work (yes, the vast majority can use ATI drivers with compiz c.q. any 3D program) if it doesn’t start looking for solutions (I see far too many users applying solutions to their system, whilst not even knowing whether they have the problem they are applying the solution for )
  • If you follow instructions on driver install you should be safe. I think the errors you are experiencing now are to be ignored since you’re running a 32bit OS. First do a proper install.

Strangely, I had a similar problem after the upgrade to kde4.2.1 from kde4.2.0 The keyboard would just stop responding, sometimes even before I logged in.

For the keyboard, my solution was to change the theme of Kdm (yast-> system-> /etc/sysconfig editor -> desktop -> display manager -> DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME -> set it to oxygen)
then restart (or ctrl-alt-backspace twice to ‘quick restart’).

If you are ever locked out, you can press ctrl-alt-f1 and then login , run ‘killall kdm’ and then start ‘xdm’ instead. You can try this to check and see if KDM is your problem

I also suggest disabling any auto-lock screen as here it keeps telling me login failed or something like that.

Okay, I have no idea exactly why this was the solution but I found this solution from somewhere on the Internet, and it worked.

As for the network I’m not sure…but here the wireless stopped and the solutio was to connect using ethernet, then unistall the Knetwork manager supplied, upgrade networkmanager and install knetworkmanager for kde4 (it’s a plasma widget).

(Edit: I forgot to mention, some days after the keyboard failed randomly, Kdm started acting oddly which I used as a clue)

Your hardware should work fine, I see nothing that seems to have a full windows bias there.

Thankyou for all of your help!!
Knurpht, I will reinstall OS 11.1_62 again tonight and will tell you an improvement soon.
Catcatmu, That is very interesting, thankyou for that tips. Now that problem will harm me no longer.lol!

Dear Knurpht,

This is the third time that I reinstall OS_64. All problems remain unsolved, I have no idea how this happen. The iso has been compared with md5 and the installation media has also been checked before an installation. I have no keyboard problem in OS_64, yet the network problem is still cause me a problem - I can’t reach any repository and the only website that I can access is only google.com.

Opensuse is the only distribution that I can rely on, and I don’t want to switch back to M$ that regularly sending me viruses. So please help this poor guy…:frowning:

All conflicts have been solved by migrating to a brand new PCLOS. I’m not going to say that openSUSE is not good. openSUSE just need some update to be able to handle the newer cards. Just for now, I’ll stick with PCLOS. Just waiting for the next release of openSUSE.
Anyway, thanks guys for helping me out!
