Impressed with the 11 DVD!

I just discovered that if you insert the openSUSE 11 DVD into the drive when running MS Windows, it launches an installer!

I was very impressed, although it did complain about a missing file when I tried to install it.

Where can I find more info on this installer?

As in what it actually does (apart from the obvious).

Thanks

What is does is what resulted in my case in reinstalling my complete windows system because the installer broke the bootmanager from Vista en there was no way to get it back except by completely reinstalling windows.

What it does is installing a mini grub loader on your C drive and it replaces your windows bootloader with a linux bootloader.

Now each time you start your pc it is no longer loading windows or whatever was on it but will start loading the opensuse 11 installer.

The only thing you can do here is installing opensuse on your pc by resizing your windows partition(s) in the installer so that you have a bootloader that can launch windows as well as suse after the installation.

I was also curious in what this windows installer could do but I had no intention of installing suse 11 on that pc.

Result → 2 days of work reinstalling Vista because the Vista Repair function was not able to put a decent working Vista bootloader in place. I tried with Acronis MBR images, fdisk /mbr, multiple partitioning tools to fix the mbr, an Ultimate Boot CD etc… Nothing worked, it kept loading the suse installer when I switched on the pc.

so if you want to use it, make sure your intention is to install the thing or you’ll break your system.

lol, thanks for the warning!

I didn’t install it as it complained about a missing .exe file (forgot which one now).

But each time I booted into vista it kept popping up. No problem, just removed it from startup :).

Shame though, it would be a great install method if you only had a .iso image.
