Illegal headers in nntp

Hi,

I just did the suggested change to use nntp.opensuse.org. And I’m seeing
these messages in my leafnode log:

>

> <7.7> 2013-03-14 22:46:09 minas-tirith fetchnews 7078 - - updated 7 lines in /home/_var_spool_news/opensuse/org/feedback/forums/comments-suggestions/.overview

Apparently I’m not missing messages - however, those message files do
not exist in my system: maybe they were deleted because they are
repeated messages I already had from the previous nntp domain name, or
perhaps because they are illegal. Dunno.

And in any case it would mean that there are illegal headers somewhere
in the nntp server over there :-?

The note about relaxed headers refers to this setting, I think:

## If in your local Usenet hierarchy, posting unencoded 8-bit data in
## headers is condoned, uncomment this option to allow this. 8-bit data
## in headers is officially illegal, although the header character set
## may change to UTF-8 soon.
allow_8bit_headers = 1

I’m indeed losing posts.

I have on one side “pan”, retrieving posts directly from
forums.opensuse.org”. Looking at the new group
“opensuse.org.news.opensuse-news”, I see there 3 posts, whereas on
thunderbird, which goes via leafnode, there is only one post, and two
were deleted by leafnode.

I have identified one missing post, but I can not see what char is not
printable!

This is a copy of the headers as seen by ‘pan’:

Hi
Did you see the announcement about the server DNS change?

Hi
Ahh, well no issues for me with the changes, but I’m pulling direct
rather than via an intermediary scenario.

A hiccup in the force somewhere? For me things are faster and no
timeout issues when switching between the four forums.

I have the same problem on two computers, one with the old setting, one
with the new. I think that the openSUSE nntp servers may be using UTF-8
on some headers.
