iDTech 3 engine & big FPS drop

Hi all,

I’m a big fan of the Quake3 engine based Enemy-Territory FPS. However, I’ve got a problem that I’m am unable to solve for a quite long time now.

After starting the game, I can play it without problem for 5-10 minutes with a normal Frames Per Second rate (~80). Then, the FPS rate suddenly drops to an unplayable level (around 15-20, sometimes even less).

I’m running a nVidia QuadroFX 350M (256Mb, 128Mb native + 128Mb shared) on a Precision M65 laptop (similar to a GeForceFX), with the lastest G01 nvidia drivers. The problem did not occur several months ago on the same machine

I did try with another Q3 engine based (Blood Frontier): the problem is the same.
I also tried running it under different desktop environments (KDE4, and the very lightweight TWM): the problem is the same.

I must admit that I am totally lost and really don’t know how to track the source of the problem (xorg version, nvidia drivers version?).

Did anyone else have a similar problem with Q3 engine based game? How to fix it?
