Idle CPU Performance

Hi everyone!

I just migrated from mandriva 10.2 to opensuse 11.3 and i totally love it! I just got a little performance issue concerning my cpu. I got a “Intel core 2 Cpu 6600 @ 2.40 Ghz” and when I’m “idle” it run at 8-15%.

When i was on mandriva (with compiz activated) and even on vista (after a few tweaks) it was never more than 1-3%. What i want to know is, is it normal? I hope not… And what can i do to ameliorate the performance? I already disable some services that was useless for me.

Thank you in advance!

run a system monitor (top, gnome-system-monitor, ksysguard, qps or some other monitor) to see what process is using the cpu

if you turn of composting does idle cpu go to 0->1%

it helps if you provide bit more info Gnome? KDE?

First, what’s taking the processor’s time? Check w/something like top:

top -d1

Good luck.

Thank you all for your answers i’ll make sure to do some more research before posting next time :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi, welcome here.

Research before you post is good. But posting is even better. That way we continue building a human cloud of knowledge
