Icons and general KDE HowTo

Ok so I have used Ubuntu for years and decided to try out suse and I haven’t used KDE in years and it has changed from 3.5 to 4. My main question is I know how to add icons to the gnome desktop but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to add icons for programs, like Firefox, or show My Computer. I even look in the desktop folder in my home directory and see stuff but they don’t showup.

Also is there anywhere I can readup on how to use KDE 4 seeing as it is a really different ball game then gnome or windows?

Welcome to KDE4!

If you have a program installed on your computer, then click the Kickoff menu, type in the name of the program you want to run, then you just drag it right onto your Desktop and an icon is created for you.

For your example:

  1. Click the kickoff menu
  2. type firefox in the search bar
  3. drag the firefox entry onto your desktop

K Desktop Environment - KDE 4.0 Visual Guide

This guide is a lot easier to read and has visual aides. Googling KDE4 tutorial got me back to this site. That link is from oldcpu from another post.

if you want the KDE4 environment to work as your GNOME desktop then you may have to right click on the empty space on your desktop, select Appearance Settings, and in the Desktop Activity section select the type Folder View. Then you can add and remove your icons as usual, and not as widgets.

Nice thing, you are moving(or trying) openSUSE after Ubuntu gnome and I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 only yesterday along with openSUSE 11.1, KDE.

So I may also need help from you as gnome really is a different game from me… like KDE is for you :slight_smile:

Hope that you will start loving openSUSE soon as I have started to love Ubuntu…
