Icon layout issue in Plasma

Compared to the previous problem, this should be easy to fix. I’m running Leap 16 Plasma.

I run three monitors and used to have my icons organized on all three (I prefer it that way). I could move icons around to place them in certain folders or locations on the screen set aside for various topics (like research/radio/communications/etc.).

Now all the icons are on the center (main) screen and I can’t figure out how to be able to move them around. There should be a way to turn off the auto-sort (or whatever) so I can organize them as I see fit. Could someone point me in the direction so I can re-organize my desktop?

Thanks!
Bob

Right click Desktop->Symbols

The standard behaviour is, they are not locked and can freely be moved and positioned all over your desktops (in a raster).

Moving is done by a simple left click on an icon, hold mous button, move.

And additional:
Right click on Desktop->Configure Desktop and Wallpaper->Icons

All of that SOP, and Desktop-Configure Desktop doesn’t have anything about Icons.

I just upgraded and had to fight with Gnome (for weeks). I finally installed Plasma and where Gnome wouldn’t work, Plasma did. (Even solved an old issue I’d given up on over a year ago!)

Sure? That is Leap 16 Plasma:

I replied poorly. That is exactly what I see - and I don’t see anything there that has to do with unlocking the icons. Moving them - as soon as you let go of the mouse button, they immediately return from their original location.

This problem is a bit more than knowing how to do things. If it was simple, I’d have found it already.

You need to uncheck “Locked”!

If they are locked, they behave exactly as you describe.

Strange thing - “Locked” wasn’t an available category as of last night and earlier today. It was NOT visible (not overlooked). (I’ve had a LOT of strange things like that happening with this computer, especially in the last year.)

Even now - locked or unlocked, no difference. It’s just like they were locked and nothing I’ve been able to do makes a difference.

I’m going to try a reboot again and see if anything changes (who knows, with this sytem that might change things again!)

Did you already test with a fresh user profile?

No. I could create another (I’ve already tried that with Gnome, but had to give up on that environment). But this is the one I use - it has all of my setup, files, and so on.

I tried creating a new user. From that I discovered that I could move from one location to another on the primary monitor, but it wouldn’t move an icon to one of the other monitors.

When I went back to my login, I moved a couple of files into desktop folders which left a couple of blank spots on my primary screen. Then I could move only on that monitor but not to the other two.

I’m not sure what to try next. I need to be able to move the icons between monitors.

More info. I can move open windows (programs) from one screen to another no problem. Some time after my last post, I found that by using shift-major mouse button I could copy icons and folders to my left screen (#2), and after that those could be moved to the right screen (#3). The original was still on my main monitor (#1, in the center). My main monitor is still completely covered with the icons for the files I regularly access.

Problem went away. I think it was a bug and fixed in the last update. Now I can move icons where I want them.

I don’t know what changed, but this makes 16 far more useful for me.
