Icon for filetype

Hello,
how do I change an icon used for some specific filetype? To be shown everywhere with this filetype in Nautilus. I have openSUSE 13.1 with Gnome.
I know how to open for example *.avi always in VLC (Properties, Open with, Set as default). I can also change icon for ONE specific avi file. But how do I change the icon for example for all AVI files? Let’s say I want them to use VLC icon.
I was experimenting little bit with ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, where I can change probably Default apps to open *.avi files and also with /usr/share/applications/vlc.desktop but that is probably wrong way. Thank you for help.

Activities ==> Type Details ==> Default Applications ==> Choose the
default programs here

GNOME 3.10.2
openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop

Or
right-click that file -> Properties
then there’s a small wrench icon, click on it (edit file type) -> when it opens in the top-left cornet there is your icon,
click on it, and now you can chose whatever you want

done,

vazhavandan - I am not sure I got it. Are you talking about default applications used to open for example AVI files? That’s fine for me, I have what I want. I just want to change the icon of all AVI files. Can I do it somehow in the dialog described by you? (And AVI is just an example, I want to know how to do it for any filetype)

GazetaCypr - I don’t see the “wrench icon” you are writing about. Is it in Gnome? Isn’t it something in KDE? If I open Properties for some AVI file, I can change the icon here, that’s ok, but it changes the icon for only this one specific avi file, not for all avi files on my disk.

Hope you understand what I need.

Icons depend on the application that is associated with it.
i.e. if i associate vlc with flv or avi it gets a cone like icon.
i don’t think that you cannot set an icon to a file irrespective of file
association. if you want to do that then you need to icon theme using
tweak tool and disable “preview” in nautilus/file manager

nethar1024, now I see your point. You want to change one particular avi file, right? Not all associations for avi files, so all look the same.
But as vazhavandan said, I’m afraid file association works globally.
I’m using KDE so I was referring to KDE features.
There is one option in Dolphin View tab, it is called preview, but I checked it and it only works with pictures.

Yes. Avi files, video files, it was just an example. I just want to change the icons shown for all files of some specic type - I mean specific extension. Let’s say I want all my *.txt files in Nautilus to have pen picture icon next to them if you understand.

This does not seem to be related to associations, at least for *.avi files. When I change avi files to be opened with VLC always, the icon is still the same (movie reel, not vlc cone). In Details -> Default applications I see only “Videos” in video section, no vlc, but still that dialog is only for some filetype groups, not generally for any extension.

I thought there is some settings somewhere which can allow this to me. If it is not possible, ok, thanks for your help. Maybe something with themes is required, I can do some research. My idea was that there is maybe some config file somewhere where I can say that all files with TXT extensions use for example some .png picture as icon… nevermind, thanks

Here, read this - http://userbase.kde.org/System_Settings/File_Associations
and here is screen
http://userbase.kde.org/File:Settings-file-associations.png
In the middle - between left column and right column there is an icon associated with file.
Click on it and then you can chose whatever icon you want.

It seems to be exactly what I need, but the problem is that it is KDE. I have not found similar Gnome solution unfortunately.
