I have been working on Gateway 675 laptops with various versions of SUSE/SLED and on the older models (matt-no glare screens) everything works fine, but on the later models with the “shiney” screens everything is detected and all the tests I’ve run are OK, but still no sound. From what I’ve read, these cards in various versions of linux are problematic. No error messages, card is detected, volume controls are not muted. ANY help appreciated, it’s frustrating to have everything “green” and not work.
I don’t know much about SLED/SLES, but we can try take a look at what you got. Perhaps you could first give me some more detailed information on your audio configuration …
Please with your Gateway laptop connected to the internet, copy and paste the following into a terminal/konsole:
wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
when it is completed running, it should give you a URL. Please post that URL here. Just the URL.
Also, please copy and paste the following into a gnome terminal or kde konsole and provide the output:
rpm -qa | grep alsa
rpm -qa | grep pulse
rpm -q libasound2
uname -a
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
I will basically be following the following openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide, in the hope that it is mostly applicable to SLED/SLES: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE
Thanks for your kind offer of help…I forgot to mention, the current exercise on these laptops is the opensuse 11.2 milestone 2
I ran the script you gave me and it ran successfully but there was no url…it just said that it was located at: (blank) please inform the person helping you. Sorry

THANK YOU again for your help…this has been very frustrating to have one version of a laptop work flawlessly and another work except for the sound and have the cards “appear” to be the same and also not have any problems in other troubleshooting I’ve tried
I’ve tried these laptops with everything from sled 10 and open suse to this current release candidate and get the same result, the older ones work and the newer ones dont. So I don’t believe it’s a SUSE version issue, but a driver or config issue…thanks again for the help, just wanted to get those details out too.
If you look at the initial menu that comes up when you run that script, it mentions a help page. If you run the help it should give you some ideas as to what to do next, which is to run the script again, but this time use the no-upload option. Then just paste the output to a paste bin site.
ie just copy and paste into a terminal or konsole:
wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh --no-upload
that will create the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt
Then open alsa-info.txt with a text editor, and copy it to pastebin - Type, paste, share. and post the URL here.
Many users who write applications or scripts will put a “help” option in their application, and in this case, the “help” is even mentioned on the very first page when the script runs. I know its a pain when one comes from a point and click world to bother to read the “help” , but it really does help speed things up when the “help” is read. …
So, can you try running that, and post the URL ? Thanks.
Also, I wish you would have told me you were running openSUSE-11.2 milestone-x. I probably would not have replied in that case. There can be bugs in a beta that I do NOT want to waste my time on. I will help for supported openSUSE releases, and SLED/SLES (in this case) but not for a 11.2 that has not reached GM status.
I realize that there are bugs in the milestones, but as I said, I have tried all versions of open suse and sled on these laptops, and have only gone to the pre release versions in desperation to see if they do the trick.
I did not see the help but thanks for pointing that out.
I do appreciate your help and assistance, but please understand that my issue is not specific to the milestone release but all previous versions of both sled and suse on these models, so I am greatful that you did respond.
I will do as you suggest and post back…thanks again
if it makes it easier, I will rebuild any of these models as any version of sled or open suse that you prefer and we can work on it that way, like I said, I’m just trying to get them to work, given that the older version of this same laptop does work with any version of open suse/sled. I don’t want you to waste your time if you feel that the milestone version will make the troubleshooting more difficult.
We can try getting your sound working on 11.2 milestone2, but you probably should post in our beta forum, so others playing with the beta can benefit from our efforts: Pre-Release/Beta - openSUSE Forums
The risk with 11.2 milestone2 is we could spin our wheels when its a packaging problem or other problem due to insufficient testing. As you can see from this troubleshooting guide SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE there is a lot we can try.
I can repost, and agree, this has been so frustrating, I would like to help others avoid my frustration, But as I said, I also have no issue at all rebuilding this in any other version of open suse or sled (or since I have 3 of these at my disposal, trying to resolve it at both levels.) I started down the SDB guide and yes there is a lot to try, a bit overwhelming to a newbie in linux…that is why I was so appreciative of anyones help and guidance. I will repost as you suggested, but will also defer to you on when to revert to a stable release…since I’ve not been able to get sound on these particular models with any release and don’t want to complicate the troubleshooting with beta issues.
thanks again
If you are interested in stability over all , but you also really want sound, then go with openSUSE-11.1 and I can try help you there.
I do not know SLED/SLES all that well (I would struggle as to where to find various rpms). openSUSE-11.2 milestone2 is for testing and not regular use, and it will definitely have many other problems.
One side issue is that I am leaving on vacation tomorrow for 3 weeks. I’ll only have intermittent internet access while away, and won’t have access to all my notes, so my replies may be a bit intermittent.
