IBM T30 Install Help

I have an IBM T30 model 2366 (no extension) and the hard drive died. It was running XP Pro. I’ve ordered a new hard drive for it and intend to load openSUSE 11.3. My question is do I have to have any operating system on the machine before loading Linux? I’m a newbie to Linux so I apologize if this is a stupid question…
TIA

not stupid…just inexperienced…

you can install openSUSE (or any other Linux i know of) on a
completely empty hard drive…
