I installed 11.1 yesterday (clean install, I had 10.3 previously).
It was running fine, I was running along, and I decided to run software update from Yast. It found many things, I checked them all and installed.
Now the system, when it reboots, I get the green screen, I choose to run (not failsafe), and there seems to be no output to the screen as the monitor doesnt seem to receive any signal.
Anyone have any ideas on what I can do please?
Hi,
What graphics card are you using? Did you install the drivers for it? If so, did you install from repos or from the manufacturer’s website?
Ian
Hi.
I have an ATI 350.
I did add ATIs repo link that i got from opensuse.org this morning.
I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
In failsafe mode, it keeps saying ATA3.0 (and 4.0 and 4.1) failed to identify, i/o error, err_mask 0x3. It does that for about 2 minutes, and then the screen goes blank.
If it is because I added ATI’s site to the repo, is there anything I can do to restore the computer?
I wish I had an ATI card computer so I could help out better.
The most likely scenario is that you added the repo and the driver was installed. If you updated after that (since you had a fresh install of 11.1) it probably pulled in a kernel upgrade. In which case all you have to do is reinstall your driver and then let sax2 recognize it. But I think if you do it from the repo’s then all you have to do is run sax2 to get it to recognize the driver.
When you boot up in safe mode, run
sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx
and see if that lets it recognize your card. If it does then it’ll start an x session of sax2 to test the screen. Just click save when it prompts you and then once it’s done restart and see if that works.
If it doesn’t work we’ll have to try to reinstall your drivers first.
Good Luck,
Ian
I really appreciate the help!
The thing is, I dont see anything on the screen in order for me to type anything.
Even in failsafe mode.
Would a complete new installation be faster/better ?
Is there a way to get something on the screen in a default VGA (I thought failsafe mode did that)?
It’s just scary. If I had lots of data in there, it would have been a nightmare.
Well, if you did the recommended partitioning when you installed, you have a separate home partition, so reinstalling would be possible without losing your files.
I’m not sure what would make failsafe mode unable to boot.
Follow caf’s advice here Load HELP! - openSUSE Forums to try to get into a gui and then post back here if it worked or not.
If it does then reinstalling your driver will be VERY easy!
Good Luck,
Ian
Thanks again.
I tried it. After the some messages (and towards the end like the ones previously posted), eventually the screen went blank.
I didnt get a change to login, or do anything like the link showed.
Looks like a new install is the safest bet.
I definitely wont be adding the ATI repo though.
In my installations, I always use the entire hard drive, as i dont have a dual boot system.
I’ll try a few other things (mostly praying) before I just reinstall.
Try to use a live CD / USB if you need to rescue your files.
They’re extremely easy to make - ask if you need tips.
Thanks.
I already reinstalled 11.1 (since it was a new install, I had my files from 10.3 backed up on a usb drive).
I installed KDE this time. I was using Gnome for about a year.
I like KDE, it seems better looking but more complicated.
I’m about to do a software update, I hope I dont get stuck again!
