I need to recover generic MBR code, instead of grub code

A while ago (probably last November), I decided to resize partitions on my laptop so that “/boot” would not be tight on space.

I used “gparted” to move things around. I actually kept the Windows partitions at their same size, but moved the a little.

I got a warning that the Windows partition might be damaged.

I pulled out the Windows recovery DVD that I had made when the laptop was new. I got a wonderful numeric error.

Google pointed me to sites that indicated a bug in the Dell software that creates the recovery media. (A side note – I had tried to purchase re-install media at the time I bought that laptop, but Dell didn’t want to sell it).

Fortunately, I was playing safe. So I had made a full Acronis backup just before using “gparted”. Restoring from the backup fixed the problems.

I still prefer the old days where your computer came with media to install everything from scratch.

Load it. If it has option to go into troubleshooting > cmd then it might
allow you to rescue.

It is a multiple version DVD: it contains Windows 7 in all flavours,
home to professional, and also Windows 2008 server edition. I got it on
a training course.
