Hi there, I’m new to the whole world of linux, i have been addicted to windows because of one program, autodesk…but now really got fed up with it crashing and decided to get disintoxicated and I downloaded opensuse 11.2 with kde 4 … what the hell that means to me is absolutly nothing… and this is the problem!!! I need help for… I searched every single program corrispondent in linux and found them, I can work with all my files, basically do everything I used to do before, even if AutoCAD is still a little problem, but in a safer and more reliable way … this is what everybody sais… the problem is I dont know whow to install not even a game in linux… yes I have been reading every single peace of “how to” with rpm’s, tar.gz’s conversions with alien … yasts… all theory but I still didn’t manage to get it to work … I must be doing something really wrong … can anybody help? I dont mean with installing linux, the live cd did it all by its self… at least that… but all the rest, is there somebody willing to help me with a real help and not the usual answer fed thinking others will understand kind of:
“how to install xyz.rpm program in linux blah blah blah?”
reply: "oh just type $ sudo bin/usr/umtsmon and them … " WTF is that all about ???
please help a windows intoxicated fellow to understand please … im pulling my ears off since I have no hair left… :’(
Please remember I come from a world of one-click served on a plate ignorant exe programs world …
Most software can be installed using graphical package manager (YaST Software Manager). Don’t worry about linux commands to start with. (Generally only necessary for some configuration).
I suggest trying with openSUSE LiveCD first, so you can get a feel for linux, without committing to an install. Even, then you can dual-boot.
Thank you for the answer Deano_Ferrari … that does resolve me a lot of hassle actually … more automatic procedures are allways a good sign of logical and inteligence … but yet there remains a problem … all these package install programs do use internet, well i can’t get umtsmon working thus can’t get the other programs working without connecting in internet … and yet another problem arises … in a few days if i can’t get it to work i will give up i think … anyway thank you very much for the help you gave me, it is most apprecited. Cheers
umtsmon is in the OSS repository, that means that it is available by default and should be on the DVD.
I’m assuming that you have done a fresh install from the DVD.
Now put the install DVD back into your drive, click on the main desktop menu, goto Applications -> System, and run Administrator Settings (Yast). Enter your root password.
Now click on “Software Management” and a new window will pop up.
In the search box at top left, enter umtsmon and press return.
You should then see the umtsmon package listed in the right pane. Right click on it and select Install.
Once installed you will have to figure out how to run it because I have no idea, I have never heard of it before!
If you get that far, maybe post back and ask for more hepl :).
The links in those two stickies should have the answers to most of your questions.
Now if you wish more detailed information, with pix and such, the Manuals created by Novell/SuSE-GmbH, in English, are VERY good. Please look here:Novell Doc: OpenSUSE 11.2 - Table of Contents
Now as you point out, getting internet access is fundamental. The easiest way is to spend some money, buy a cheap router, and have the router access the Internet. And all you do is plug your computer into the router, and all the Internet connection aspects between router and computer is automatic. To control the router, you use a browser, and in the browser’s location bar, you type the router’s IP address (something like 192.168.2.1) and that gives you the control display for the router. In there you enter all the appropriate ISP information (username, password, etc ) … for your router to connect to the internet.
If you already have a router setup to the internet, then if your installation went ok this internet access should be automatic.
But the bottom line, is getting internet access is fundamental. Without internet access, your Linux is much more difficult.
thank oyu for the bullet point how to do, finally a good wiki how to do stuff, precise, straight to the point … posting back to you, i did install it even thanks to the post of Deano_Ferrari and yours … now i get a message box pop up saying “welcome to UMTSmon” with the only choice to click ok and when i do the box vanishes doing nothing … do i need to install WvDial ? PPP? arent these allready in the Live cd of 11.2 kde 4.3 ? i even tried this :-
rooter: user/bin/umtsmon
and it give me this :-
umtsmon 0.9.72.200.90509 .
installing GUI SIGABERT HANDLER
/usr/bin/umtsmon: symbol lookup error:
/usr/bin/umtsmon: undefined symbol _zn7q
ActionC1EP7QObjectPKc
what the is this all about? an object it doesnt reconice?
For OldCPU: what you say is correct but unfortunatly we do not all have connections at home were we can do a lan connection with a router … otherways i wouldn’t be going crazy with a hsdpa modem … as i am in this moment … i am connecting with a sony ericsson w880i trought windows xp … and this is supported by umtsmon … but its not working for me … so what to do when you only have one connection? wouldn’t it be easier to creat rpm’s that support all dependancies with all distroes or maybe that is asking to much to standarize at least this?
The very first router that my wife and I bought, had a serial interface that connected to a high speed dial-up modem, and the router would dial out on demand. We then had two PCs connected to that router, and we could both access the Internet easily. My wife from a WinXP PC. Me from a Linux PC. As soon as one of us clicked on an application that needed internet access, the router would dial out and connect to the internet. The trick was to remember not to stay on line too long and drive up the internet bill.
But I don’t think they make routers like that any more (that do dial out on demand via a serial interface). Is there no chance of getting a high speed DSL connection in your area? Most modern routers should support that.
Maybe it has it’s own GUI, what I would do (each time I want to know the correct executable file to run) is run the software tool again and search once again for umtsmon.
Click on it in the right hand pane and then down the bottom you should see a few tabs.
Select File List and it gives a list of all installed files. You might be able to work out from there what to run.
Just try each one in a terminal and see what happens!
Or, maybe umtsmon is now the adapter, have a look at the network manager icon and see if it shows anything new.
You might simply have to create a new connection with all your details etc’.
Or another simple method is to simply click on your main menu and start typing the name you want, ie umts… If it is in the menu that should find it. Also you can press alt-f2 and type a name into the run box. All found matches will be displayed.
Like I said I really have no idea what to tell you exactly because I have no experience with that.
It can be hard getting used to a new OS, everything is done differently and you can feel like a fish out of water, but if you keep plugging away you’ll get there in the end. People forget that they didn’t just know everything about Windows when they first ever started using it, it took time.
OldCPU did make me think … what if … since a hsdpa modem phone is actually a self regulating hardware like a router why not try a different road? well …
UMTSmon does not work at all, Wvdail is so **** i can understand why it cant read my serail port but it does read the modem… etc
I just connected the phone to the usb, selected on the phone the option “internet on when usb connected” … AND I AM WRITING YOU FROM MY NEW OPENSUSE 11.2 KDE 4.3 … yet this doesnt meant nothing to me … but im happy rotfl! rotfl! thank you for all the support …
