lornix and I have already touched on this, but I didn’t really ask what model he would suggest.
thats what I’m asking now, what model would you suggest and from what company?
though there are some requirements, it has to be compatible with kernel 2.6.13-15-x86_64, and/or ALSA 1.0.9-23-x86_64, as I am running suse 10.0 on x86_64.
For hardware always good to check here first.
I have a creative Creative Audigy 2 and never had any problems though not sure if they are available any more
In a previous thread, I noted you can still find 1.0.14 version of alsa rpms packaged for openSUSE-10.0 by Packman. You may wish to keep that in mind, as there is a very significant possibility that 1.0.9 of alsa will not support a sound card that you purchase today. Index of /pub/packman/suse/10.0/x86_64
Note that openSUSE-11.0 is incredibly fast to install, as significant effort was made to improve the installation speed (and also improve the boot time, starting with openSUSE-10.3, and continued to 11.0). openSUSE-11.0 is also supported by Novell and the community, while your SuSE-10.0 has no support from Novell, and less people in the community are familiar with it.
I believe the 64-bit Linux implementation on 11.0 is also superior to the 64-bit Linux implementation on 10.0.
Also note that openSUSE-11.0 runs no slower than 10.0. ie you take no performance hit going to 11.0. Perhaps (IMHO) the only “downside” in going from 10.0 to 11.0 is that 10.0 includes proprietary drivers, while 11.0 does not. However the community tries hard to support 11.0 with proprietary drivers packaged on various sites for 11.0.
You can also test openSUSE-11.0 using live CDs (without installing anything on your hard drive) for:
KDE-3.5.9 (32-bit and 64-bit): Carlos Goncalves: openSUSE 11.0 KDE3 Live CDs
I do not recommend the openSUSE KDE-4.0.4 live CD (which is available on the same URL as the Gnome URL above).
alright!, so I looked under there and saw that the C-Media CMI8738 is listed as supported for all suse distros 10.0 and up so as that is just the sound processor chip, any sound card with it should be compatible correct?
IMHO not likely for certain. Maybe yes. Maybe no. There will be different implementations, and some will work and some will not. You best chance to ensure compatibility is to update your openSUSE.
