I need a music Player that will work with SUSE 11

I run open SUSE 11 and I am trying to find a music player that just works!

I have tried:

Songbird but it just plays the first second or two of any song at superhigh speed then cuts out and I cannot import any music from my music folder!

Amarok just plays the tracks at super high speed and again I cannot import any music from my music folder!

Banshee does not even begin to play mp3 files

Atunes I could find no way to make any file play

What am I doing wrong? All I want to do is play back some mp3’s!
Please Help!

Are you using the default install of the players ? try installing the versions from packman repo’s

Though it is considered a video player, I use Kaffeine for music all the time and have had no problems with CDs. downloaded files or streaming radio stations.

Hi Andy,
I am sorry to be so dumb but what does “packman repo’s” mean?

The way I installed all the programs was as follows.

go to the “Computer” button on my toolbar then go to the “install Software” button.

Then I check the “installed Tab” to see if it is already there if not I go to the “Available” tab and type the name of the program I am looking for in the “Filters” box.

hope this sheds some light on what I am doing wrong

You probably installed amarok etc from the default install repo. Those packages wont work due to legal matters (no mp3 support). What you need to do is first add another repository in yast. Packman is a great repo for multimedia. You can find others here: Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE

How to add a repository follow this link: Repositories - openSUSE-Community

Hi suskewiet
Is “repo” linux slang for repository? if so I have that Packman repository installed and enabled as far as I can see.

I have noticed that the only Amarok available is for KDE I run Gnome would that make a difference?

for GNOME you can use banshee or banshee-1
it pretty good with gnome…

repo is repository… - yes

if you have packman repository in your repository list you need to add gstreamer packages…

basically easyest way to install codecs

one click at link below
http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-gnome.ymp

it from 1-click-collection - openSUSE-Community

I also suggest mplayer from packman repo it same as VLC but last dependencies make problems for me…

if something do not work with default players it should work with this…

Amarok should work fine in gnome as well since I use amarok myself in gnome. Maybe you have to change some of the options in amarok like audio output driver. Try esd, alsa or oss and see if that helps.

@didencool
Thanks for clearing up the “repo” thing!

I will check and see if I have the other items you mention

Thanks for the reply

Hi -

I use XMMS. It’s a lot like WinAmp. Works great. YMMV.

Hi all,
I have done all the mods recommended in the how to’s
but so far Amarok is exactly the same playing everything at 60X!

The XMMS player seems to work but is so small I can hardly see it!so it’s a no go at present.

Kaffiene just refused to work .

SMplayer is not working either

Banshee is not working

So anyone that has some ideas it would be great I cant believe something this basic is such a problem!

Did you try going thru this

FYI: I have used zinf in the past. In Packman too.

Use mplayer. Better, try to install it from the source packages. It works fine in openSUSE 11. Plays all media file formats (known to me), just throws audio related problem in 3gp. It also works fine with Fedora7, 8 & 9, Ubuntu 7,8, .

Hi caf4926
Yes I did all that that is what is so suprising. I will have another go tonight I just cant see what it could be

If you actually have the ability to play with some software but not others, you need to check the player engine.
In amarok I use xine on my box

in my laptop its yauap

I have checked and it seems Amarok is using the Yauap engine I know i have Xine on my PC but can see no way to change the player engine in Amarok

Though it is considered a video player, I use Kaffeine for music all the
time and have had no problems with CDs. downloaded files or streaming
radio stations.
