I’m looking to make a screencast of my desktop as part of an instructional video. I would like to know if there are applications or HowTo’s to change the mouse cursor to have a highlighted footprint so that the viewer can easily be follow its position.

you didn’t mention which desktop environment or operating system version
you are using…in mine (openSUSE 11.4 with KDE4.6.0) in the desktop
effects adjustments there is:
-“Display a mouse cursor locating effect when activated.”
-“Magnify the section of the screen that is near the mouse cursor”
-“Mouse Mark - Allows you to draw lines on the desktop”
and, under Workspace Appearance > Cursor Theme you can select a variety
of shapes and colors for the mouse cursor
