…I had to try Ubuntu again when they released 10.04, that was about 6 months ago. Previously I was using openSUSE 11.2, and for the most part I liked it. I really liked Gnome at first, but it started to **** me off as time went on. It is much harder to customize things in Gnome as compared to KDE. I really miss Yast, it was something I liked when I first started using openSUSE, but I didn’t realize how much I liked it until I left. Anyway, I really miss openSUSE, and I miss this forum. It’s not as busy here as the it is on the Ubuntu forums, but there’s a lot less idiots here.
I am going to try out Fedora for a few months, just to see how I like it. I’ve had Fedora on a spare partition on my desktop, but haven’t really given it a fair workout yet.
I’ll probably be calling myself an openSUSE user again in a month or so when I get my new laptop:
HP Elitebook 8540w
i7 740QM
4GB DDR3 RAM at 1333mhz
160GB SSD
NVIDIA FX880 with 1GB DDR3
1920x1080 display
Awsome machine (I am undecided between Lenovo and HP although I am well served since years with a Samsung Q35 pro, but Samsung won’t let the “glare” screen go, so next one…).
Have fun with Fedora.
Ps. edit: I forgot: there is no “idiot” out there. Just people who had no access to information, that are discouraged to read the manual or that do still no know how to use it. Well,…one or two maybe
I assume this will be your first time using openSUSE-11.3. If your HP Elitebook 8540w has an internal (or external) CD/DVD drive, Try booting from a liveCD first to provide confidence/indication of easy compatibility. Note there are big changes taking place currently in Linux wrt graphics, and openSUSE is right in the middle of implementing these changes, … ie changes such as
implementation of KMS in the kernel (for example, it is associated with support of automatic hardware graphic reconfiguration)
move from HAL to UDEV for automatic hardware detection (such as one’s graphics)
SuSE-GmbH removal of sax2 graphical wizard from openSUSE (SuSE-GmbH asked for community technical help to maintain, which community turned down)
Xorg now supposed to automatically configure one’s graphics card, and hence a removal of need for xorg.conf configuration file, and setup of new /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory structure for manual configuration of graphics where auto does not work
move to noveau graphic card driver for nVidia users, where noveau is still not completely mature
The long and short of it is if you are one of the unlucky one’s whose automatic hardware configuration does not work, you may need some help in configuring. Don’t despair as its likely there is an easy solution.
If you find your first boot with openSUSE-11.3 does not work, try the boot code “nomodeset”. This is documented in the openSUSE-11.3 release notes. There is also graphic card guidance here: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
One thing you will run in to, is the NVIDIA driver. Read ahaead, it will save time, if you know you have to use ‘nomodeset’ or set KMS in the kernel to disabled, blacklist the nouveau driver. Since the videocard is pretty new, you may need the beta driver. All good to know before installing. Like said, run the machine from a Live USB stick or CD, and you can find out what works and what needs some extra attention.
