Hello to everyone,
I am using OpenSUSE 12.2 and my other friends are using Windows 7 generally, maybe some Windows XP too. My friends would like to use my printer which is connected to my computer, is it possible? I think the solution is through using some Samba-related stuff, but I am inexperienced about this. I am awaiting your responses for a meaningful solution.
Thank you for your interest.

Windows 7 can directly print to a network printer such as presented by cups (if cups is
configured to serve the network). XP can not. In Windows, add the printer, and assign it the ip
address of your Cups server, i.e. http://<ip address of your Linux box>:631/printers/<queue name>.
That’s the easiest method, but for XP you need to share it via samba. Here are some docs:
Samba and Suse: HowTo Set up an
openSUSE-Windows Home Office LAN/Network.

It should be possible with Windows XP too to directly use IPP
http://howto.ccs.neu.edu/howto/printing/adding-an-ipp-printer-queue-to-windows-xp/
I can test that in a few hours with a virtual XP machine.

IIRC, you needed to add “something” downloaded from Microsoft to support IPP printers. It is
possible that some organizations install their XPs with that support included. That webpage is
from an organization - but I would like to be mistaken.

Maybe before service pack 3 or the home edition, it works out of the box
with Win XP Professional Service Pack 3 and nothing special in addition,
I just tested that now.
Of course you need to install the correct printer driver for the model
you use.
