I have proposed that openSUSE maintain a single Forums in a single language using machine translation to support any/all languages of the world.
To date,
The response have been varied but mostly pessimistic…
- Machine Language cannot produce consistent high level translations (generally true, but is proper idiomatic language always necessary?)
- Technical terminology isn’t translated. (Maybe. Currently running tests, but in any case through Crowd sourcing there should be significant improvement in a relatively short amount of time)
Without access (ie. deploy and run a modified Forums website), I should be able do some X-domain web tricks to create a Read-Only version of the Forums, but there would likely have to be considerable custom coding to create the ability to also do translations for submitting new posts and replies.
If there is a real, demonstrated desire to do this, I’d be willing to move it off my far back burner to at least medium priority in the things I’m doing.
As for NNTP, I’d have to think about that but I’m sure again if there is a strong enough demonstrated need, it should likely be possible at reasonable expense (time/effort, not always money).

@tsu: load the forums in konqueror, have a random thread translated and take a look at what happens to commands etc. Translation software is improving at rapid speed, but it’s not there yet, by no means.
But,
That’s to be expected initially.
The question is that if through crowdsourcing, ie each time incorrectly translated commands are corrected… How long would it take before it could be considered usable and 98%+ reliable? Or, are the commands really that untranslatable that they literally have different meaning in another language?

The problem is that commands shouldn’t be translated but they are:
cat /etc/hosts
In Spanish:
gato /etc/hosts
(Well, no, in Spanish, the correct command is still “cat /etc/hosts”)
In English:
man man
In Spanish:
hombre hombre
(Well, again, no, in Spanish the command is still “man man”)
And so on.
