I got Milestone 3 today

I ‘zypper dupped’ and got Milestone 3 from the factory repos. Grub2 isn’t loading the newest kernel. At the grub screen, I have to choose “advanced” and then scroll down to the third entry to get the latest kernel on my system. KDE is now 4.11 beta. I haven’t looked around much yet but everything seems to be working.

I’m running M3 within VBox 4.2.16. I didn’t try the installer yet.

Apart from everything working, here are some of the things that are not working.

1: Install from live media. This problem was discovered by Dale, who posted a bug about it (bug 827520). The install goes fine, except for the “minor” detail that the installed system has no kernel.

2: Nouveau is giving me problems with KDE. When I boot into the live system on my box with nvidia graphics, the KDE desktop does not finish coming up, and there are lots of weird artifacts on the screen.

I was able exit the session with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (twice). I then used a failsafe session (twm failsafe) where I edited “$HOME/.kde4/share/kwinrc” and added “Enabled=false” to the “Compositing” section. That turns off desktop effects. After that, I could bring up a KDE desktop.

My tests were using openSUSE-Factory-KDE-Live-x86_64-Build0575-Media.iso, booted from a USB drive.

I installed build 0576 with the same failure. then I tried again while running the usb stick I saw that apper
wanted to update so I did the subsequent install was successful. btw my repos pointed to factory
I am going to try the same with a download from Index of /distribution/13.1-Milestone3/iso

I installed and got the to retry boot loader yada yada . Checked the /mnt/boot files with dolphin saw it was empty so I copied the files from

loop device/boot to /mnt/boot I think
Redid the boot loader finished the installation and success.

I installed 13.1M3 (64bit) from the DVD image today. This was a reinstall from yesterday’s install from live KDE.

The DVD install went very smoothly. There were none of the install problems mentioned above for live media.

I installed milestone 3 KDE 32-bit, replacing milestone 2 on a ThinkPad X41. MS2 was working fine. The install was from the DVD iso written to a USB stick with SUSE Studio Imagewriter. I verified the downloaded iso checksum before writing. (Is there a way to verify the written USB stick?) The installation was totally from the iso with no network connection. The installation seemed to go correctly, including the initial boot from the hard drive to finish installing.

After installation finished, Plasma Desktop Shell crashes on booting into KDE. As with dale14846, I was able exit the session with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (twice). It will boot into IceWM. However, “$HOME/.kde4/share/kwinrc” already had “Enabled=false” in the “Compositing” section. In IceWM, I did the initial updates offered in Yast, but that made no difference in the crash. Adding “nomodeset” to the line /boot/vmlinuz in the Grub editor did not help.

The system has Intel mobile 915 graphics controller.

The crash report is:

Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks,

You should be able to start Plasma manually. Press Alt+F2 and enter:

plasma-desktop

Maybe you have to kill the old plasma-desktop first to keep it from trying to restart and crash again:

killall plasma-desktop

The GNOME Live CD is passing the checksum but failing the media check. Trying the DVD now, and it’s running out of disk space! Both for GNOME and for KDE. I have 20GB partition for root (/) and I’m just doing the default package installations. Am I the only one running into this? I’m doing a clean install, and didn’t have any problems installing M2.

Thanks, wolfi323, that got around the issue. I did the kill, then start, and it seems to be stable. Seems odd it crashes on boot, but then can run manually. I’ll see if there is anything I can add to the bug report.
Best regards,
Howard

For a fairly basic 32-bit KDE milestone 3 installation from DVD iso, I have a 10.6GB root partition, and only 4.2GB are used after installing. I have not yet installed LibreOffice or a few other applications, but there is plenty of room for them.Howard

I’m having the same issue in my 32bit Factory installation in VirtualBox, so I will try to investigate that further and find out what’s wrong. But it will be a bit hard to debug since it doesn’t crash if you start it manually…

Somehow I have the feeling this problem is restricted to 32bit since nobody using a 64bit system complained until now (and it is a bug you can’t miss, can you?;)).

If I am understanding this, then the checksum is verifying your download of the iso file. So the media check is indicating a problem in writing that iso file to the media.

You did write to a DVD, I hope. The iso is too big for a CD.

I have successfully installed M3 (64bit) on two computers. I have not yet tried 32bit. I’ll try that in the next couple of days. Which are you using?

Is it possible that you have a broken DVD writer which is causing all of your problems.

A failed burner is a possibility, but it hasn’t come up before this morning. I’ll try a flash drive image and see if I have better luck with that.

There are updates in the factory repo today, including a new kernel. My update was 63 updates and 7 new packages. Maybe some of these updates will fix the plasma-desktop problem some of you are having.

Or maybe it will make it worse. rotfl!

Well, I did update today (12 hours ago) and nothing changed…

The new kernel is still third on the list of grub2. The kernel from the original install of M2 is at the top of the list. I noticed the display configuration tool in KDE 4.11 beta Configure Desktop is different than 4.10. Check it out.

Yeah, that’s a bug. 3.10.0 is considered lower than 3.10.rcX.
Remove those rc-kernels manually with yast or zypper.

Edit: This is the bug report: Access Denied

I noticed the display configuration tool in KDE 4.11 beta Configure Desktop is different than 4.10. Check it out.

That’s the “famous” KScreen: https://forums.opensuse.org/english/other-forums/news-announcements/tech-news/488154-new-kde-screen-management-tool-ready-widespread-use.html

The easeist way to fix the live installation problem that i have found is to
copy the files from /read-only (Loop Device) to /root/boot. Do not copy the grub and grub2 directories
run the installee

Yes, I agree with that. But I would add an extra note:

Once you have the system up and running this way, go into Yast Software Management, and reinstall the kernel, instead of relying on what you copied over. You can manually delete the kernel that you copied over, if it has a different name from the reinstalled one.

The copied files are on the kive system not the installed system that is they are copied from ghe loop device to the hybrid that alows for a clean install.

Presently I am updating the live system and will reinstall to a different hdd and see if m theory is correct
