I can't install openSUSE Leap 16

I have the exact same problem :frowning: I tried the ISO and DD in Rufus, but it doesn’t install… It throws me into the Dracut emergency shell. I tried Etcher, but it didn’t help. However, OpenSUSE Leap 15 installed without any problems. I don’t know what else to do.

I don’t know about rufus but maybe use another tool:

Hi, welcome

I think you wrote the ISO to a partition on the USB ( f.e. /dev/sda1 ), instead of the raw device ( f.e. /dev/sda ).

I followed the instructions, but nothing worked. First, error 31 appears, then a whole cascade of error 71. After a short line saying “Welcome to OpenSUSE 16,” everything goes to a black screen. I’m desperate. I’ve been working in OpenSUSE for years, but now what should I do?

Have you proved your downloaded ISO for errors with shasum?

What means:

Also your PC is able to run Leap 16.0?

/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 --help | grep -i x86-64

I have Leap 15 installed on my computer and I want to upgrade to 16. It’s not working. I also tried installing it on a laptop with more modern specs. What did you do to the bootloader that makes it impossible to install the distribution? Version 15 still installs fine. Maybe I should revert to the old version of GRUB in the 16 distribution?

I can understand your frustration with this. The brief “Welcome to openSUSE 16” message followed by a black screen means the kernel booted at least, but the installer UI never successfully started.I’m wondering if this might be related to your GPU perhaps? Share the graphics card details using inxi -GSaz.

If you are using NVIDIA, the following section of the release notes could be relevant:

The opensuse-migration-tool might offer a better upgrade path for your situation. Do make sure that your PC meets the CPU requirements first as Sauerland already mentioned:

Also mentioned in the release notes:

I spent a whole week trying to install Leap 16 instead of Leap 15. It didn’t work, and again, I’ll say this: version 15 installs without a problem. I’ve tried different flash drives, different image creation programs, different command lines, and so on. I don’t know what else to do. I’ve been a loyal OpenSUSE user for years, and now I’ll either have to switch to another Linux distribution (which I really don’t want to do, but I have to) or wait for you to fix all the bugs and errors in the system installer. For users who need a good, working system for work and comfortable living, not a grueling struggle with installation issues, then I might return to OpenSUSE.

Just to be clear - you keep saying “you need to fix” but we’re fellow users and volunteers here, not the openSUSE developers. Also, you haven’t run the command Sauerland asked to check if your PC can actually run Leap 16. Without that check, we can’t really help figure out why it won’t install.

Have you had a chance to look at the migration tool page I shared for upgrading from Leap 15?

Are you kidding me? Look at the screenshot… Where’s that damn repository? How do I connect it? I’ve been struggling all day again trying to get anything done. Can you please provide proper, clear instructions, not a cryptic article made up of riddles and puzzles? I’m furious—I wasted a whole week, and then another day trying to get anything done, instead of installing a proper distribution! Bring back the proper, time-tested system installer!

You may tone down a little bit.
opensuse-migration-tool is available in the Leap 15.6 OSS Update repo. As can be seen at your screenshot, you seem to have network and/or mirror issues. You should verify that you have refreshed all your repos (which can be seen at your screenshot was not done), and that the mirror is available. Your picture looks like you try to install it from a TTY session. Make sure you are using the correct runlevel with internet access…

No matter what I do, it doesn’t work. All I can install is Open SUSE Leap 15.3 :frowning: It installs and works without problems). I found and downloaded the ISO image of Leap 15.6, hoping to update or install, and then use the migration tool to update to version 16. But all I get is a black screen and nothing else (the download starts, and then everything drops to a black screen). When I install version 16, I get errors 32 and 71 and a drop to Dracut. I installed on two configurations: 1. AMD FX 6300, Nvidia GTX 750Ti, DDR 3 10GB, SSD 512. and 2. Intel 7 Core. Nvidia RTX 3050 DDR 4 16GB, SSD 512. Nothing worked. I think the new versions 15.6 and 16 are having some issues with Nvidia devices… I apologize for my harsh comments and anger; I’m truly sorry I behaved that way. You absolutely didn’t deserve it. I’ll probably stick with 15.3 for now, and then I’ll switch from OpenSUSE to another distribution, like Linux Mint or Ubuntu. Thank you for your help, patience, and responses.

To overcome the initial black screen, you need to add “nomodeset” to the kernel command line.

In the GRUB bootloader, I select the desired line (the first one). I press “e” to edit. Then I find the line starting with “linux” or “linuxefi” and add “nomodeset” to the end of that line before “quiet splash,” if it exists… Then I press Ctrl+X or F10 to boot. Is that how I do it?

Yes, that’s correct.
