I can't get my wireless PCI card working

I bought a PCI wireless card for my desktop. It is supposed to be Linux-Friendly and is supposed to work right out of the box with many distros, including Suse. I can’t get it working, though. Can someone please help me?

Here is the card as advertised on Newegg:
Newegg.com - EDIMAX EW-7128G IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card Up to 54Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, 802.1x, WPA, AES - Wireless Adapters

I am using Open Suse 11.1 x64, kernel version 2.6.27.23-0.1-default #1 SMP.

I tried using ndiswrapper (see error screenshots below):

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5998/error2q.th.png](http://img141.imageshack.us/i/error2q.png/)

I am using the GUI for ndiswrapper, which is called kndiswrapper. The auto-driver-install button does not find the network card; it only finds USB hubs, as you can see from the first screenshot. I tried installing the driver manually by using the manual install option and selecting the rt61.inf info file, but that results in the error message in the second screenshot:

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/117/error1.th.png](http://img523.imageshack.us/i/error1.png/)

I don’t know what that error means.

I can’t figure out what that error means. I tried to configure it with Yast, but it’s still not working. I tried to install the Ralink driver for it via Yast:

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/615/error3.th.png](http://img198.imageshack.us/i/error3.png/)

I’ve never used a wireless card under a GNU/Linux OS before. I don’t know what to do. I’d appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Maybe this will help:

So there is some signal, but the signal level looks very low.

I believe this device may use the rtxxxxdrivers, get more advice from here rt61pci - Linux Wireless

Andy

p.s. this would have been better in the wireless sub-forum, many a wireless Guru frequent it, & you might have gotten an answer quicker

Someone told me:

Here’s what the device should look like in the lspci -v output:

...
03:05.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Subsystem: RaLink EW-7108PCg
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 20
Memory at fddf8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: rt61pci
Kernel modules: rt61pci

But here’s my lspci -v output:

...
03:07.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
        Subsystem: RaLink EW-7108PCg
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 21
        Memory at fbff0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
        Kernel driver in use: rt61
        Kernel modules: rt61, rt61pci

It looks like I have the wrong kernel driver in use. How do I fix that?

I am looking through the readmes and stickies here to find an answer.

I did this:

linux-cg0f:/home/user # dmesg | grep firmware

so apparently the device firmware is installed.

Next, I downloaded a troubleshooting script from Benutzeranleitung/Usersguide von/of collectNWData | collectNWData.sh

The output is:

linux-cg0f:/home/user/Desktop # sh ./collectNWData.sh
collectNWData.sh V0.6.1.12 (Rev: 1.162, Build: 2009/06/09 18:29:26)

I never did figure out what the problem was. I have an old 10 GB disk that I just installed a fresh copy of Suse 11.1 x64 on. With the wireless card present at the time of install, it is detected, and even defaults to using wireless rather than wired internet. Hmm! Suse is a good distro. Thanks for trying to help me, deltaflyer. If you want to, you could help me get it working on my regular disk. If you don’t have time, that’s ok. I’ll just re-install and keep my /home partition intact.

A few things you could try:-

Ensure the wired connection is set to “on cable connection”
check ipv6 is disabled
try reloading rt61 module
delete current wireless settings & start again
re-install rt61 modules

Andy

With the fresh install I just did, it’s using the rt61pci module, not the rt61 module. Maybe that was my mistake. I couldn’t get it to use the rt61pci module on my old installation.
