I can't change the resolution of the screen

Hi,

I’m new with opensuse and after install it all is ok but I have a problem with the nvidia graphic card…

I’m using de VESA driver because opensuse don’t recognise the screen. I set it to 1280x1024 (that’s my resolution) and all is ok.

But now I want to active the 3d acceleration of my 8600gt nvidia, so I change from the xorg file the driver “vesa” to “nvidia” but there is the problem

When I restart the system the aceleration is active but only with the 800x600 resolution. It doesn’t give me the option to change it.:’(

My xorg file is:

that section shouldn’t be empty. but it always happens to me with an MSI 7600GT PCI Express card and the nvidia drivers.

paste this in and see if it helps(it’s my modes that i’ve had to carry over since like 10.1 or so). sorry but it only goes up to 1280x768. also remove the DRI section at the bottom.

i’ve had this problem for quite a while obviously and haven’t really figured out why it happens. thought it was only me.

put this in the extensions section

Option "Composite" "off" # "on" to turn compositing effects on

Hi!!

I’ve been trying your method but… it’s the same problem :frowning: the resolution only is in 640x420

Have you installed the nvidia drivers?
If not have a read here.
If you have open a console type su then root pass then nvidia-settings
Set your resolution and choose save to xconfig

/Geoff

Hi Geoff

I have installed the nvidia driver, but it says me that nvidia-settings is a command not found :frowning:

This is strange you should be able to run the command. Are you sure spelled it correctly?
Try sudo sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia in a console. Reboot and if the resolution is not fixed
try nvidia-settings again

/Geoff

ok i have installed with this page the drivers :S and now i can go to nvidia settings but i still can’t change the resolution :frowning:

I don’t know why… when I put
glxinfo | grep direct

it’s all ok :frowning: :frowning:

I’m starting to think that is a monitor problem because it doesn’t recognised it, it’s shows as “unknown”

is there any problem in using dvi?

No i use dvi what monitor do you have?

/Geoff

A benq fp71e+

Had a quick look in yast > hardware > monitor yours isn’t listed but BenQ FP783 (digital) is try selecting that one and see if you can change the resolution.
Also if you have kde you could try setting in configure desktop found in kicker (start menu)

As a last resort can you test the moitor on another machine to see if it works
