I can only get network to work in a vm if I set the firewall to "iptables"

I just would like to understand why this is the way it is. All I know is that if I change the file config at: /etc/libvirt/network.conf to use “iptables” I get network access. But I don’t understand why. Shouldn’t my system be defaulted to use “nftables”?

From https://wiki.libvirt.org/VirtualNetworking.html:

WARNING - The NAT is set up using iptables rules. Be careful if you change these while the virtual switch is running. If something goes wrong with the iptables rules, your virtual machines may stop communicating properly.
