Recently, I can not ssh to my remote servers or NX to the server
When I do a ssh command it will hang and can not get a the connection to a remote server. I then try to NX to the remote server it can’t connect. If I reboot the remote server everything will work normally for a few days and same problem occurs.
When I directly work on the server, I can see that all processes are still running but rcnetwork restart isn’t working and other network related tools are also not working.
We have the a seccond server exactly the same, no problems at all.
I am a newbie to Suse linux and have to administrator over 4 remote servers and some servers work fine and some has the above mention problems. I don’t know where to start troubleshooting. And don’t want to reboot the servers all the time. If you need any further info just let me know.
Hi
Are they running openSUSE or SLES? If SLES, then you need to post over
in the novell forums at http://forums.novell.com as this is the
openSUSE forum
Sure you don’t have hardware problems, does the system have LOM
interfaces that you can login too? Have you looked through the logs
in /var/log to see any events at the time the system networks
interfaces stops?
Are all the systems in the same location using the same router? Is it a
regular occurrence, eg same times?

openSUSE 11.1 x86 Kernel 2.6.27.7-9-default

I have the same problem. It’s with OpenSUSE 11.1 x64.
My server has Webmin, Dovecot, Postfix, Apache and MySQL running.
Its rather annoying having to restart every few days.
At first I was running OpenSUSE in two separate VMs and the mailserver kept knocking over. The webserver became unstable once. The I reloaded the base machine with CentOS and the problem persisted. Every 2 days the mail server knocks over.
Now I’ve done away with the VMs and am running all services on one single machine. It’s been running nicely for about a week now and tonight for the first time it knocked over AGAIN!
When that happens I cannot access SSH, Webservices, Email Services, Webmin NOTHING. Pinging the server from a machine on the same network does give me a ping reply and Im quite certain I will be able to login on the machine itself instead of remotely but why does it knock over?
This is certainly not on for me. Everytime the server knocks over it inconvenience not only me but everyone working at our company and everyone of our customers for whom I am hosting educational services.
If anyone knows what the problem is, I would really like to know coz I’d really HATE to use any other OS than OpenSUSE coz they all suck and loading windows again isn’t an option at all.
Have you applied all kernel updates? There was a kernel bug that would freeze the machine. This was fixed by an update around March 09. It affected any software using the inotify system call, which is used by samba and dovecot servers.
