Here is my laptop: MSI M670X. My video card is GeForce Go 6100. I’ve used several drivers on it from 180.08 to 185.19. The problem i overheating. My graphic card is at 77C in 2D mode (imagine the 3D ~ 88C) - it’s leading to the following problem: the battery is to close to the ventilation system, and it’s heating together with the video card. The constant high temperature reduces the battery life (extremely).
What happened: my battery’s capacity is reduced to 15% - now my laptop can stay without AC power less then 30 seconds. Conclusion: it costs 80E/battery/year. I tried to replace my kernel (pae-default, default-pae) / changed the driver from 180.37 … 185.19, but the temperature never changed.
Before I’m going to buy a new battery I wanted to know that Is it possible to keep my GPU temperature below 60C - or somewhere around the normal operating temperature.
Yea I also have the same problem with my GPU being really hot. I had purchased a cooling pad though when i was using XP and gaming on my laptop. It was getting pretty hot. But with Kwin effects on all the time, I realised the GPU is getting pretty hot
I use a 8400M GS. From what i knew before in windows, the driver used to underclock the card until the card was needed. This not only saved power but reduced heat. ALOT of heat.
The 173.XX drivers did the same thing. But unfortunately, that driver was kinda slow. apperently it was reported that the drivers were slow from the underclock to normal speed.
the 180.XX drivers were very good in terms of speed. But I realised, there is no underclock feature that i can that is
I have another model of MSI, and for whatever reason my entire system is overheating too. While it sometimes overheats to the point that my laptop shuts down, I find that it heats differently on different surfaces.
Keep these in mind(in case you know these things then hope it helps other users):
Don’t put your laptop on plastic surfaces. Plastic is a better heat conductor than wood.
Don’t put the laptop on soft surfaces or blanket, as these reshape themselves and because of there is not enough distance between the laptop and the surface, it doesn’t get heated enough.
Try lifting a bit the back of the laptop(use a book or something similar)
