What model exactly? I have a E220
Install mobile-broadband-provider-info package and the one including “ppp”, wvdial . I’m not using gnome but under KDE this is kppp
Add your user in the dialout group and restart.
Then when you connect the modem, the network manager applet will recognize it automatically. You may have to choose your country and provider

ok, I’m not a specialist but you should fix it by installing the following packages:
