Huawei E5830 Wireless Modem (from 3)

This modem is supplied exclusively by 3 [afaik] and it works with Opensuse 11.2-64 and the Network Manager.
It currently only works wirelessly, not directly with the supplied USB wire - although this can be used simultaneously (see note). If detected by the Hardware monitor just eject it (or have a look for the non-existent Linux drivers). I tried their ZTE dongle but could not get it to work anyhow.
The modem manager s/ware only appears with WinXP, it is necessary to have a look at this because 3 send you your web account password exclusively by text to this manager. Otherwise you have to put the SIM into a 3G phone to read the text. They are not keen on Linux obviously.
Each boot up requires the input of the wallet password for operation, or alternatively the OK of the password prompt - sorted.
This is a handy device and I would like to have it operating just by plugging in. So it needs the equivalent of the manager s/ware from somewhere? The latter is also supposed to direct the browser to 3 home when a top up is needed (so not for Linux currently).

Nb While connected to 3 the modem does not appear to charge itself, which is very odd. Wireless operation means that you have to also have a wireless dongle [correctly configured with network ID and password - a very simple process].

thanks for this;

not surprisingly! someone is offering one that is unlocked:

NEW UNLOCKED HUAWEI E5830 MiFi WiFi WIRELESS MODEM - eBay Other Wireless Modems, Wireless, Modems, Computers. (end time 12-Jul-10 20:59:36 AEST)

folks suggest this is a useful device; can allow more than one netbook to work off one source … as I understand the Huawei picks up 3G and transmits and the netbooks (or whatever) take wireless off Huawei

This is just a quick update to say that it now works with the above 11.3 version in exactly the same fashion.
On a separate note, the installation/upgrade to 11.3 is not straight-forward in that:
certain configurations (eth0 wlan0) are not done unless you make the effort, because Network Manager does not need them. The firewall probably needs the specification of “any” [device/configuration] in the external zone. Otherwise you will get a number of messages complaining about no configurations, no zones specified.
Of course you might get them anyway!
