HPLIP username & password

I am trying to install HPLIP for my HP6380 wireless all in one printer and it is saying I don’t have permission to install printer and is asking for username and password, if I use my username for the computer it does not work, where do I find the username and password for the HP printer…

what version of openSUSE are you running?

how are you trying to install hplip?

have you tried installing it the correct way?

that is, have you opened YaST, searched on hplip, selected it for
install and then clicked to accept the install?

This sounds like the configuration for CUPS - you’ll probably need to use
the root username and password.

am running open 11.2 Suse, have tried to install from YAST but it wants a username an password when it gets to the final install part, have not tried CUPS yet but will give it a go:(

If you’re doing printer configuration, it’s already using CUPS on the
backend - that’s the only part of printer configuration I’m aware of that
asks for both a username and a password.

If it’s just asking for a password when doing the package install, then
you need to supply the root password as root is the only user that can
install RPMs.

  • smj41,

once you installed hplip, open a console, become root (su) and type
hp-setup

Follow the instructions. This worked best for me.
