HPLIP problems Can I load version from 15.0 as this worked fine?

I have a problem with my printer on version 3.19.12 that comes with 15.2. I have recently upgraded from 15.0 where the same printer performed with no problems.
The actual printer problem is where the printer gives nothing on the page when the text is changed from black to gray.
I have tried to use the latest hplip versio at 3.20 and that was much worse and would not print.
How do I get older version or drivers.
Any suggestions or alternatives welcomed coz this affects many years of saved files that will not now print.

Can you share the printer hardware and config details?

lpstat -t
egrep -i "name|model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*

I also wonder if there is some supporting libraries missing?

hp-check

Have you checked that printer settings are as they should be?

lpoptions -p <printer_name> -l

*Replace “<printer+name>” with the actual defined printer name.

Ultimately, (assuming no config issues), it may be that a bug report is required to resolve this issue.

Thanks for the reply, appending answers to first three questions, options I have looked through and checked but when installed and running before the options were left as default. One problem is as you suggested missing files so I’ll begin by addressing this issue first.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:

  1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
    compile HPLIP.
  2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to
    successfully run.
  3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

You mentioned that you had recently upgraded from Leap 15.0 to 15.2… can you share your configured repo list

zypper lr -d

FWIW, I recall a similar thread earlier this year where a user reported problems with HPLIP configuration and subsequent printing errors evident (related to gstoraster filter failing for some reason). However the user upgraded once more, and the problem was gone without further investigation undertaken.

I will probably remove the printing 15.2 repo, this was added as I tried the latest hplip to no advantage.
Thanks

Still not certain the hp-check is finished correctly and I’m floundering a fair bit here. I have been looking for packages around the pyQT area and added a bunch of stuff but hp-check still finishes the same.
Am I going in the right direction here and anything I am missing? Thanks

Try:

zypper in -f python3-qt4

Hi thanks
that got me further on hp-check, it did now complete, with a couple more missing areas, added some more packages and now check runs fine.

No errors or warnings.

Done.

Then dang, high hopes were dashed as still have same printer problem.
I’ve got to admit to some surprise at how much needed to be added to the base install to run hplip properly, perhaps it would be usefull to have some info on this in the hplip eb pages.
Just in case I’ll try a machine restart and check again & then, where next? anyone

Further info and just discovered is there is no colour output.
To get more information I created some lines of repeat text then altered them to red green blue and gray.
Print preview looks just as it should but not on the paper
Result is some very very faint gray text but no colour.
All of the settings look OK.
Anyone ideas for direction, any ideas welcome, thanks

Are you sure that the ink cartridge levels are ok? Does a CUPS test page print ok?

Take a single colour pdf and do something like

lp -d Photosmart_Plus_B210 /path/to/file.pdf

You could also try a PNG or JPG file…

lp -d Photosmart_Plus_B210 /path/to/foo.jpg

Same strange results (regardless of file type)? You may have to undertake some diagnostic steps as described here in order to locate the root issue. This essentially involves putting cupsd into diagnostic mode (more verbose reporting), running a print job, and examining the error_log (specifically for filter-related issues). Once you understand the filter chain used to get a file printed as ink on paper, it is also possible to run these manually step-by-step via a terminal, and observe the output to see if any issues have arisen. Described well in this Fedora wiki page…

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_printing_problems#Running_filters_by_hand

I thought I had replied to this, may have not actually posted but anyway I’ll try again
I had been using for my test a text doc of two lines one black and one gray output as pdf file. I have repeated this with 5 lines of text as black, red, green, blue, gray and saved as pdf. views looks fine in okular and on print preview but not onto page.
printed pdf as suggested from lp command, black is fine, no colour, some faint gray as green line.
printed jpeg from lp command, graytoned image produced ,no colour.

followed instructions to clear files and set debug
printed pdf doc and lots of errors s here

where is next, please? Seems to be lacking colormanager connection

Looks to me that something called ColorManager is not configured properly, specifically referencing its service name.
How is your printing set up… Are you using proprietary (eg OEM) software?
Did you make any custom changes to your HPLIP configuration (if yes, inspect those. If no, consider something needs to be configured which isn’t).

TSU

FYI
I also did a quick skim of Internet results on that error with “ColorManager” in the line…
Most of the results had to do with the printer name, a few resolved by changing the printer driver from the recommended to something else… I imagine that also might result in the printer name address being identified differently.

Not necessarily your solution,
But following is a very old openSUSE post on the same problem and its solution

https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/506831-Cups-2-0-2-Printing-Issues

Hi
For the “org.freedesktop.ColorManager” error, is colord installed and colord service running?

Hi
No your technically wrong, it’s the colord service.

I don’t think the lack of color profiling is the issue here.

The filter chain is as follows…

The print job completes with no filter errors (which is consistent with actual printing to paper at least)…

I’m speculating a bit here, but do I wonder if the issue is with Ghostscript processing…

D [11/Oct/2020:09:22:03 +0100] [Job 44] Ghostscript command line: gs -dQUIET -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dNOINTERPOLATE -dNOMEDIAATTRS -sstdout=%stderr -sOutputFile=%stdout -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.3 -dAutoRotatePages=/None -dAutoFilterColorImages=false -dNOPLATFONTS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dColorConversionStrategy=/LeaveColorUnchanged -r600x600 -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=595 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=841 -I/usr/share/cups/fonts -c \'<</.HWMargins[9.000000 9.000000 9.000000 9.000000] /Margins[0 0]>>setpagedevice\' -f -_

If you are up for it, you can run the print job by hand as already exaplined in the Fedora troubleshooting guide. At each step of the processing, there are tools (described in the wiki page) that can be used to examine/view the output, and that might help confirm where the problem lies.

This may take a bug report to resolve.
