after an update to 11.2 (from 11.1), 64 bit, I don’t get the printer to work. I reinstalled the driver and checked in cups: it says that the printer is available and waiting for a job. When I send something to the printer, nothing happens. The priont job will be stopped immediately.
The printer is properly connected: xsane finds the scanner, that is part of the printer, without a problem.
The printer is also ok: I can copy documents, it just works fine.
The tool
hp-check
says that all installed printers are ok. It only misses only the “PolicyKit”, but I don’t know where to get it and it’s not required.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks in advance!
Are you still set up as an allowed user for the printer, not just the scanner? If the scanner works for you, you are probably already in the lp group and have a valid cups password. But you might want to look in cups to see your printer’s (not the scanner’s) allowed users.
I had a little problem getting my HP all-in-one going again after the update to 11.2. I went through all the steps and finally a reboot. Not sure what fixed it, but it started working again.
Well, as already said, even root can’t send things to the printer. I am in the lp group - what other could be there? And how can I find out the “allowed cups users”? You mean those in the lp group?

What steps do you mean? Is there something like a HOWTO?
I’ve already tried many things, and of course also plenty of reboots, but no luck so far. I’m really puzzled.
How did you set up the printer? Did you set it up by running sudo hp-setup from a terminal?
I’ve found that letting the hp-setp install the printer, everything usually works fine.
Yes, I used that. I now found out that I just cannot use the printers that I had installed in 11.1 - I can setup new printers, they work fine. I’m going to re-setup the printers I had already set up, but it’s of course cumbersome.
The point is: I have documents particularly in OpenOffice which have particular settings for printing stored. I use various printers with varying setting, e.g. duplex printing from lower tray, single side printing from upper tray etc. Makes life a bit easier. I had 5 different printers set up this way.
OpenOffice doesn’t accept all the settings that were set up in hp-setup, i.e. I have to do the duplex printing within OOo again, but Acrobat Reader for instance does, and then it’s quite practical. Anyway, I hope that setting up new printers with old names will help that I don’t have to set it up for OOo all over again for all those templates etc.
The cups “Allowed Users” can be found on the cups printer tab. But don’t bother. I’ve looked at it and I’m not on it. It’s blank.
Every thing you describe happened to me. But the problem was I did not give myself a cups password. You obviously know what you are doing, but as I said, the only that cured my problem was
Hi,
I have a new problem (version 3.9.10), it’s actually an old version, but it was gone for a time:
When trying to print high resolution photo quality, the printer crashes and must be restarted. tzhis was a known bug, but if I remember correctly, it was repaired. I have no idea where this comes from.
Any ideas?
I did note on my new HP Photosmart Premium C309a, that if I send a large file (2.56 MB) to the printer to print a CD cover, it only prints 1/2 the cover and then “hangs”.
I do not know if that is related, but possibly it may be.
One note/caution, if the printer “hangs” when trying to print, then ensure you cancel the job in your PC’s print queue. I neglected to do that, and 3 days later the /var/log/messages and /var/log/warn file filled up over 600 GB of file space, and I was not able to boot my pc properly until I deleted those files.
