HP8710w integrated bluetooth issue.

Hi there!

Recently I have Installed openSuse 11.4 and everything looks fine but integrated bluetooth adapter doesn’t work. In Devices->System Settings I see following message: “No Bluetooth adapters have been found.”.
Command:

hwinfo --bluetooth

shows nothing. Touch button that was responsible for enabling WiFi/Bluetooth (while I used Windows XP) seems not working now, but WiFi is working perfect.
In BIOS bluetooth and wifi is enabled. I have no idea how to fix it.

My laptop: HP8710w with integrated bluetooth.

Please help me.

Hi and welcome to the forum :slight_smile:
Can you check in YaST system services that the bluetooth is enabled?

Can you also run the following command from a terminal to check for output;

hciconfig

Hi malcolmlewis!

Thank you for reply.

In YaST in System Service tab, bluez-coldplug is enabled, but when I run proposed command still getting nothing:

linux-283d:/home/pavel # whoami
root
linux-283d:/home/pavel # hciconfig
linux-283d:/home/pavel #

Seems like my laptop forget about bluetooth at all.

Hi
Can you check dmesg and/or /var/log/boot.msg for bluetooth entries?

I get;

 /usr/sbin/hciconfig

hci0:	Type: BR/EDR  Bus: USB
	BD Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ACL MTU: 1021:8 SCO MTU: 64:1
	UP RUNNING PSCAN
	RX bytes:48072 acl:2661 sco:0 events:1518 errors:0
	TX bytes:1518 acl:48 sco:0 commands:33 errors:0

Also what bluetooth applications are installed, eg;

zypper se -i blue

My file /usr/sbin/hciconfig too big and looks very strange, so I decided not posting it directly in forum, instead of it I uploaded it on rapidshare server: http://rapidshare.com/files/453329069/hciconfig

As you can mention no even hint on bluetooth.
I have 6 usb ports and one fingerprint.

Any other ideas?

  • Post your full technical Spec, which Opensuse install option did you use livecd, DVD, etc?

  • Are you running a 32bit install or a 64bit install?

  • If you can find out which company made your bluetooth (broadcom, atheros, Etc)

  • Sometimes the Hp Technical spec has the info on who made your bluetooth chip

  • I am not clear on whether bluetooth is still working in XP for you?

  • If it is make sure it is turned on when you shutdown your xp, then reboot into linux and run lsusb and lspci.

Is this what your laptop looks like?

Thank you for advice.

Here you can find general information about my laptop in pdf.

Generally it came with Windows XP professional 32bit and bluetooth worked there perfectly, for now I formated all partitions and installed openSuse 11.4 64bit. I have no idea about bluetooth manufacturer, but i can request it from HP support, but according to my experience I’m not sure that response will be fast.

Would you post the output of a lspci for me?

Hi
On my system, the status of the command /etc/init.d/bluez-coldplug status is running, there is no output from yours?

If not, can you try;

sudo /etc/init.d/bluez-coldplug start
/etc/init.d/bluez-coldplug status

Does it say ‘running’? if so, try running the command;

/usr/sbin/hciconfig

Last time you posted the binary…it’s a command to run :wink:

Malcolmlewis, the state of bluez-coldplug in my system is running too. I have restarted this process anyway, and It’s still running. I tried to run hciconfig, but there is no output.

linux-283d:/home/pavel # /usr/sbin/hciconfig
linux-283d:/home/pavel #

Do you know anything about touch button that responsible for wifi/bluetooth enabling. I suppose that it can’t start because two process tied in one button and system decided that wifi more preferrable than bluetooth. Maybe I can manually add some packages, that will run bluetooth on demand?

Hi
On my ASUS netbook, it uses one key combination for wirless and
bluetooth. So you might have to look down in the /proc directory to see
it there is a key entry to toggle to enable it.

Have you tried switching the button on your keyboard to see if it posps
into life?

I just fixed a large part of my bluetooth issue, could you run this and post the output.

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

On a side note the shared wifi\bluetooth button also seems to be giving me trouble.

All my research points to your bluetooth being a broadcom and a usb internal. Which makes me wonder if it is in a switched off state. One of my broadcom wireless cards failed to show in linux when I ran a lspci, if it had been switched off when I shutdown windows xp. (Hp dv5000)

I have no ability to switch on wifi/bluetooth service under Windows, as I decided to refuse from Microsoft operation system and totally removed it from my laptop including recovery partition. Moreover, I can’t understand how this switcher can take affect in openSuse if you turn it on under windows. Two different OS, sounds like miracle.
My touch button lights on during bios boot time, so I think it must be working as hardware. But soft part in OpenSuse can’t take control under it.
I found out one particularity, If I’m switching on wifi (“Network” in the tray-> “Enable wireless”), wireless button start flashing, and wifi start working. I can enable and/or disable this service thru icon from tray. But if I’m pushing touch button, my wifi became inactive and I loose ability to switch wifi from tray. The only way that I discovered, that can bring wifi alive again, is to disable wifi from bios, then restart laptop, then enable it under bios again. Looks like woodoo dancing, but it’s working for me. Problem with BT still exist.

Hi
Look down in /proc/acpi probably under button and see if there are any
entries,

Can you try booting with the following GRUB option appended after the
vga=0x314

acpi_osi="Linux"

You might need to start looking at the DSDT file. Pure speculation, but
windows may have drilled into the system and toggled a flag to disable
the bluetooth…

You might also peruse the HP Linux site for drivers as HP does ship
systems installed with SLED so it may give some pointers.

Hi,

“acpi_osi=Linux” doesn’t take any effect, neither after adding this command in kernel section during loading, nor after adding this command in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader file.

Here is all content from /proc/acpi/button, no any hint on bluetooth again:

I have visited official HP site for drivers, seems they doesn’t support suse now.

I followed your given link and clicked a bit futher in the Microsoft Driver area.
HP Compaq 8710w Mobile Workstation - Software Support for HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology (Microsoft Windows Vista) - HP Business Support Center TAB “System Requirements” gave me (among many names Microsoft Systems) the the following interesting lines:

Supported Devices and Features
VID_03F0&PID_011D=“HP Integrated module with Bluetooth wireless technology” VID_03F0&PID_171D=“HP Integrated module with Bluetooth wireless technology”
…]

So I guess the numeric ID [03F0:011D] or the numeric ID [03F0:171D] might describe the Bluetooth device in your laptop.

Searching these forums with the latter one gave me some results:
site:forums.opensuse.org 03F0:171D - Google-Search.

And the miracle that you did not see the bluetooth device:
ether

  1. an usb device, compare:
    http://cateee.net/sources/lkddb/usb.list

usb_ids 03f0 011d ‘Integrated Bluetooth Module’

or
2) the solution might be that you already saw it as it might be a combination of (wlan/wireless LAN/wifi) device AND (bluetooth) device, compare:
Linux Kernel Driver Database: CONFIG_BT: Bluetooth subsystem support

vendor: 03f0 (“Hewlett-Packard”), product: 171d (“Wireless (Bluetooth + WLAN) Interface [Integrated Module]”)

But if I would have to guess I would guess in the directions:
hardware switch, BIOS, FN-key-combination, enable bluetooth in windows and than boot to linux, try booting to a openSUSE live-System after you have enabled bluetooth, maybe just an new install with bluetooth and wireless LAN enabled…

So I have to have a forum break now and the quiz is open still/again…

Have a lot of fun!
Martin
