Is there anybody who tries to run/install OpenSuse 11.3 on a HP ProLiant DL 380 G7 server ?

Not G7, but I’ve got a couple of G3s running with it.

G7 vs G3… that’s a REALLY BIG difference.
Like comparing an 286 with a Pentium III

Not at all, the G7 and the G3 are not really that different - the G7
is multi-core, the G3 isn’t.

No… there’s not a SINGLE chip (well… maybe a resistor pack here and
there) that are the same… VERY radically different platforms.
Chipsets are different, RAID controller is different, ethernet is
different, etc…
Unfortunately, we only run SLES on the servers… so I can’t say
anything about 11.3 on them… only SLES and oS 11.3 is radically
different from SLES 11 SP1. I do know that before SLES 11 SP1 (e.g.
plain ole SLES 11) that you did have to add some drivers before install
(certainly for the bnx2x… and even a kernel parm on top of it as well,
disable_tpa=1, but that went away with SP1).

Well, yeah - those are minor peripheral differences, IMHO. From the
point of view of running openSUSE, there is very little difference.
Except for the latest, I’ve had openSUSE on almost every type of Intel
x86 Proliant - PL8500, PL6400R, DL[135]8, ML[35][78]0, you name it -
they all work. The older ones could be a little quirky though.

Rack-style only though.

As such, then, you are WELL aware of the hardships with the changes made
to the architecture over time, the times where the install was nearly
impossible (without doing your module compilations, etc.).
Just saying that with the VERY radical changes inside of oS 11.3 and the
newness of the G7, there could very well be an issue… again, I don’t
really like running the consumer desktop OS on my servers… so I can’t
say for sure.

I haven’t really had such issues, except for the really early
proliants (pl8000 and older). Maybe it’s because we’re always trailing
edge (in production).

For what matters on a server, 11.3 isn’t all that different to 11.2 and
11.1. One or two radical changes, yes, but it’s things like rsyslog
instead of syslog-ng and such. There were some last minute udev
problems, and the upgrade of libnetsmp to 2.0 causes a problem for the
HP proliant support pack.
